Review/FOTD: Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess SunBlush Illuminator, Limited Edition, Summer 2009

Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess SunBlush Illuminator,

Limited Edition, Summer 2009

This stock picture doesn't do its justice at all!
The real product is so much prettier!

Product Description:

Shimmering sun-kissed color to enhance your tan.

Hint of Warm Color

Wear SunBlush Illuminator alone or over your favorite bronzer. Play with multi ways to get your glow on:

- Use center shade as blush. Sweep from middle of ear toward tip of nose.

- For a more dramatic glow, swirl both shades together and apply to apple of cheek and down center of face. - Estee Lauder

Colour/Texture:

This is the real McCoy!

Look Closer...

If this is not a beautiful palette, I don't know what is!

No shimmery over-spray that dies in one swipe. No ridiculous small parts testing my application skills. Just a simple design with all the essential colours that bring out the cheer in your cheeks! No punt intended. I've skipped the swatches as I failed to capture a good shot. Please have a look at my happy FOTD. I really love the slightly shimmered soft warm peach on me. Feels weightless too.

Most recent FOTD with this palette.

I have not been so happy with a blush palette for ages. The moment I opened the palette, I knew this was my kind of blush and highlighter in one. Upon testing, it is very pigmented and the texture is so fine and smooth. No flying power either. And it is super easy to use this palette too. With a Skunk Brush (as good colour payoff), you can sweep up all colours mixed and puff it onto your cheeks. It's a perfect go-to-blush compact.

My palette has been highly utilized since I got it. I have been ignoring my Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blushes and HG Make Up For Ever Compact Shine On 5 (highlighter) combination. I just reach for this palette more often than others now. I guess I have to play with this new toy till I get sick of it before going back to old loves.

I have no problem singling out the outer ring as a highlighter. I just have to use a smaller brush for this purpose. You know what I use to apply this palette? It's this small Shu Uemura Portable Cheek Brush! It's the perfect size to use the outer light colour as highlighter without touching the center warm peach circle. Brilliant!

Packaging/Price:

Here are some pictures to show its packaging. Again, All Estee Lauder Powder Palettes are of the same size and shape. Therefore, this one is exactly the same as all the rest.

Honestly, I think the colours, bronze and seaform green selected for the packaging are hideous ! They don't match with the content. And the packaging design is crap too. If I didn't see the powder inside, I wouldn't have been bothered to get this palette. Just what were they thinking when they created this packaging?

It's so big that I almost can't hold it with one hand.

What you see is what you get. There is no added brush or sponge. So take our your trusting blush/highlighter brushes for this palette. I think most brushes included in such palettes are of little use anyway. Therefore, this will not be a deciding factor for me.

The powder weighs 0.45oz. / 13g. Again, same weight as all other powder palettes from Estee Lauder. This is still retailed for $32USD. Most definitely a bargain!

I think Estee Lauder Powder Palettes are of great value for the prices. They are big and weighty and not too expensive. When the colour and texture of a specific palette work for you, don't hesitate to get it. It will last for a long time. You can see that Estee Lauder doesn't raise the price for this limited edition palette. Just the same old $32USD.

My Verdict:

I will rave about this palette over and over again as it's just that perfect! I love it's colouring, finishing and texture. And it is most lasting! I've napped with it on (pressed against the sheets) and still woke up to a cheeky face! :P (I know I shouldn't have slept with makeup on but I fell asleep without realizing it! Slap me if you want!)

The packaging is less to desire. In fact, it is down right ugly by my book. If you can beyond that, you are going to be dazzled by a most beautiful blush of the year! I am quite sure this will make it to my Top Ten List this year. It's that wonderful. I even plan to by another one as a gift or backup (which I probably don't need) when it is released in Malaysia later.

Unfortunately this is once again, a limited edition item. So please rush to check it out, if you like what you've seen in my post. Don't be alarmed by it's being an Estee Lauder which has been falsely accused as old ladies' makeup brand. (Well, I am not young so I guess it's party true, eh?) Young or old, this is a very natural peach flush that everyone with my skin tone can wear well.

Nope, I don't get a dime from Estee Lauder to say so. It's just a fabulous product that you simply can't miss!

Off you go!

Swatch: Chanel Lift Lumiere Firming And Smoothing Fluid Makeup; Question: Lip Care

One reader requested these swatches recently...

Chanel Lift Lumiere Firming And Smoothing Fluid Makeup

*Chanel Malaysia carries the following shades. This is $65USD on Chanel US site (link above.)

Out of curiosity, I gave it a little test run at the boutique as its name and functions sound rather similar to my HG Make Up For Ever Lift Foundation.

I find this foundation dries a little slower than my Make Up For Ever version. Colour matching was a little tricky for me as there weren't many shades to choose from. I found #12 Opaline the best match but even that is slightly on the pink side. Therefore, I probably won't be interested in this foundation unless my MUFE Lift is discontinued. (Touch wood!)

Remember I did a Q & A post a week ago about lady like behaviours in the public? Well, my son & I were grabbing a quick bite at Uncle Lim in Ikano Power Center near his school last Friday. I spotted a very classy looking lady opposite of our table. (I like to look at people secretly! Maybe people also do that to me! :P) She had on very beautiful makeup, nice matching clothes, shoes and etc. I couldn't help myself but admiring her while we were waiting for our food.

Then all of the sudden, she crossed her legs and started shaking one leg away!!! It was such a shock to me that I nearly chocked on the hot coffee. It's dangerous enough to cross your legs while wearing a short skirt, let alone shaking one leg vigorously at the same time! My appetite dropped immediately. I was speechless!

OK, now I am finally getting into the topic for today. I am going to talk about how to take care of our lips. I open mention that I have super dry and easily chapped lips and that I can't wear matte lipsticks and etc. Well, someone wrote to me about lip care for dry lips recently so I decided to do a post on this subject based on my experiences.

1. Protect your lips against sun as you would with your face even on a cloudy day. Why? Our lips have thinner and more fragile skin compared to our face. If you would use sunscreen on your face, why do you skip this for your lips? The UV rays from the sun can damage our lips even more since they are so delicate!

My HG lip balm is this el cheapo drugstore Australia made QV Lip Balm on the right as it has SPF 20. You don't often find lip balms with SPF so high so this is definitely worth trying.

Of course there are also products like the more expensive and famous Biotherm Aquasource
Moisturizing Balm Protective Lip Care Shiny Effect SPF 8
($15.50USD), Clinique Long Last Glosswear SPF15 (63MYR) or MD Skincare Powerful Sun Protection SPF 25 Lip Balm ($18USD). But I reckon $$$ doesn't = performance so I haven't been bothered with those since I am very happy with my QV!

Besides, I trust Australian made sun protection products as the country does the most extensive researches and most stringent on regulations. :)

2. If you have any of the following habits. Get rid of them!

  • Licking your lips or pursing them tightly - promotes lips drying and aging.
  • Peeling off the dead skin on the lips - causes lips direct damages.
  • Still applying lipsticks when the lips are dry - causes lips severely dehydrated
and speed up drying and cracking.
  • Using only facial tissues to clean lip makeup - tissues don't remove the oil in lip products properly. Always use a proper lip makeup remover. My experience taught me that an oil based remover works best as oil removes oil.

3. Prep your lips before applying lip makeup. If there are obvious lines on the lips, it is not possible to disguise them completely even if you apply lip glosses on. Not only the poor finish, but it's also bad for your lips. Therefore, it is very important to prep your lips properly before adding makeup. You can try dipping in an oil or cream based lip balm (not the stick type) with a cotton swab, then onto the lines. The oil or cream type lip balms (i.e. Eucerin Aquaphor) have deeper and faster penetration power than a stick type. Personally, I avoid lip balm sticks in general as they are not as lips skin friendly.

4. Care for the lips when they are cracking. This is what I do.

  • Softening the lips with a warm towel for few minutes. This helps removing dead skin.
  • Brushing the dead skin with a toothbrush with soft bristles.
  • Applying a hydrating lip balm (again oil or cream base) all over lips.

For this treatment, I use Colonial Dames Pure Vitamin E Oil. As this oil is very sticky, I have to dab it onto my lips slowly. This offers an overnight effect. I wake up to see soft and plump lips. :)

I am sure there are more ways of looking after your lips. I'd like to hear your little tricks! We dry lips girls need brainstorming! :)

Review/FOTD/Comparison: Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush Nuancier Solaire (Sunshine Tones) 001 Rose Brazilia

I have had this palette for some time. I got it ever since it was just launched. I have not reviewed it because I wanted to know if I could use it as an eye shadow palette too. It took me many moons to test it and now I finally can work on the review properly. Please read on!

Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush Nuancier Solaire (Sunshine Tones)

001 Rose Brazilia
- Not sure if it's limited edition.

Product Description:

What it is:
A blush featuring complementary shades that contour and highlight.

What it does:
Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush contains cannage-quilted palette of shades expertly coordinated for a perfect sweep of color every time. Brush them on together for an easy glow, or use the shades individually to contour and highlight. In two harmonies, each in a portable compact complete with brush. - Sephora

This is the other variation - Coral Riviera 002. I didn't get this because this collection is not available in Malaysia yet. I had to ask my makeup buddy in the US to do the shopping for me without trying it out first. If the center colour was a peach or coral, I'd get it too! I didn't think the dirty brown center colour would work for my skin tone judging from this Dior stock picture on the right.

I finally saw fuzkittie's picture of Coral Rivera 002 (posted on BoA "Eien" Inspired Look + Moto Jewelry.) It looks quite different (less muddy) from the stock picture. I think I might just need it!

Colour/Texture:

Close-up of the brand new palette

Unfortunately, the gorgeous golden dotted lines are only overspray. They came off on my first try. I decided to just wipe off all the golden shimmers before using the palette. When discounting the golden overspray, the entire palette is matte finish.

Close-up of the palette without the golden shimmers & swatches

I couldn't make the mixed colour show properly so I will leave that for my cheeks instead! :)

FOTD

I realised that I made a mistake on listing the items used in the pictures. It was Urban Decay Prime Potion Sin (UDPP Sin) not UDPP Original!

As I did quite a few experiments in this FOTD, I'll debrief it for you.

1. I used UDPP Sin on top of foundation and powder because the colours on the palette are all matte. I wanted to have a bit of shimmers. :)

2. I used all colours except the center peach on the eyes. All these colours are very small and so I had to use very small pointy eye shadow brushes for the job in case I accidentally mixed up the colours. It's a painstaking, time-consuming process! I used Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner on top of the eye shadows (and winged out slightly) instead of tightlining as the colours of the palette aren't as deep and vivid as real eye shadows. I have never spent so much time on applying eye makeup!

3. I also used the brown on my brows. As you can see, the brown looks reddish against my black brows!!! It's way off! I removed it afterwards but I took these pictures before reapplying the brow makeup so you can see the mistake! If you have brows similar to that brown, it will be most handy. But apparently, that brown is not for me at all. Just what was I thinking???!!!

(Please don't mind my brows, I have a problem with shaping brows all the time. I dare not to trim them too thin so they are often unruly!)

4. I swirled the whole palette with this Laura Mercier Finishing Brush because it's loosely tapered so it would not pick up too much pigments since there are so many brown .

5. Lastly, (though not related to this palette) I used Shiseido The Makeup Smoothing Lip Pencil RS303 on my entire lips and finished with Make Up For Ever Fascinating Lip Gloss 1. The result was equally as good as using a lipstick with brilliant sparkles!

Laura Mercier Finishing Brush

I applied about 3 coats on my cheeks. It's all matte but I like it on my cheeks!

This shows how the colours work as eye shadows and how wrong that brown is for my brows!

So, the colours have decent pigmentation and work pretty well as a blush and eye shadows for me. But what about the texture? Well, it's soft and fine but slightly powdery. I really don't think anyone can dig up the colours separately without messing up the entire palette unless you use a tiny brush or cotton swabs. I tried both and some powder still flew onto adjacent colours. I'd suggest just swirling up the whole palette for convenience and a more natural result.

One more thing, this palette has a rather strong fragrance. It smells kind of like rose. I'd rather it's scentless. Oh, well... If you have a problem with scented blushes, this palette may not be the wright item for you as the scent does linger for some time.

Comparison:

These are my very old Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush 001 Sunrise Party & 002 Sunset Fiesta. They were the pioneers of Dior Bronze Harmonie De Blushes.

I initially liked them because I got 4 colours from each palette and the colour stripes are big enough to be used individually. However, I soon realized that not all colours suited my skin tone. And when mixed together, they weren't exactly the most complimenting colours on my cheeks. These were limited edition in Malaysia but I believe they were not so in the States. They are still available on some e-tailers till today.

I know that Dior later released couple more Bronze Harmonie de Blushes of the same stripy design in the following years. There were at least 2 more palettes, if not mistaken. (Please correct me if I am wrong.) I didn't bother with those when they were released as my poor experiences with the first 2 palettes.

Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush

001 Sunrise Party & 002 Sunset Fiesta, 2006

I prefer the new Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush a lot more even thought it's not possible to utilize small parts by themselves as highlighters and shading colours. (Where on earth can you get a cheek brush that tiny for such purposes anyway?) The new Dior Bronze Harmonie de Blush is better for me because:

1. I can wear the mixed warm pink well;

2. I am not wasting specific colours as all of them will used as a whole.

With the older version, I'd single out certain colours on each palette and only use those but wasted the rest.

Packaging/Price:

This palette followed the same design and size of other Dior palettes (i.e. the 5-Colour Eye Shadow Palettes.) But instead of blue, it is now a bronze (to match its bronze theme I guess.) It also has a mirror and a brush. This time, I think the brush is quite useful because it's small!

It is 6.5 g./0.22 oz. and retailed for $42USD. I think it's reasonable for the quality product.

My Verdict:

This is a pretty blush for sure. It's definitely not the right palette as a highlighter or contouring unless you are super patient and skillful. Its individual colours can certainly be duped as eye shadows if you aren't too tanned. However, since this a blush and it doesn't state on the palette whether or not it's eye safe, Use it as eye shadows at your own risk! It's also scented so that's something to consider about. I personally like this palette and don't mind the scent. And I think it's an All-In-One palette on the go for a no-fail simple pink nude look.

Having said this, I am still interested in its sister palette... :)

Preview/Swatch/Makeup Application: Shu Uemura Painitng Liner Collection & Portable Eyeliner Brush, 2009

I went to One Utama to buy some birthday presents for family members. As I was near the Shu Boutique, I decided to have a look at The Pink Collection (Rouge Unlimited and Gloss Unlimited). There were too many people hovering around those testers so I didn't manage to get a close look the last time I was there.

Oddly enough, that rather new collection had been replaced by the even newer products, the Painting Liners!!! The lip products had been moved to be placed with all other lipsticks and glosses. I suddenly lost the interest in trying them... I didn't even bother to look at them for more than a glance when the sales assistants picked them out for me! Well, I guess it's also because I am not a big fan of Shu lip products.

My eyes were definitely on the new Painting Liners! I was most excited to see the array of colourful liners and I quickly set to work with the swacthes. I was lucky as the store's just opened up for the day and I was the only customer! HAHAHA! They were all mine to play with! And I knew how friendly the sales assistants are in that store. I asked for permission to take pictures and as usual, they were only too happy to help. Love the girls there! I only buy Shu products in that store ever since I got to know them. I can't stand the boutique in Mid Valley and other counters as none of those places are as friendly and tension-free as this boutique. You get what I mean?

OK, let's look at this the brand new Shu Painting Liners! :)

Shu Uemura Painting Liner Collection, 2009

NOT Limited Edition

The Painting Liner has not been uploaded on any Shu Uemura sites yet, not even its Japan site! So I am presenting to you only the pictures I gathered.

Counter Display - Close Up

Shu also added its mascara collection alongside the Painting Liners. But I decided to skip those but only show the liners.

Swatches

Can you believe that someone actually stole the display samples? This display was just put up the day before! The sales assistants I spoke to were equally as shock as I was. They said even one of the rather large mirrors was also stolen! Whoever you are, shame on you!

M = Matte, G = Glittery

As a result, M Black is not included in this swatch collection. The girls told me the stock will only be in the store in the afternoon. Since I didn't have time to go back there again, I will try to update the swatch of M Black when I can. I was told it's super duper black, a lot more black than the M Midnight Blue which is already looking rather black even though it's blue!

This collection includes 10 brightly pigmented gel liners as seen above. It's a trademark, colourful Shu collection in my opinion. The colours available are:

G Gold
G Silver
M Black
M Brown
M Midnight Blue
M Vivid Blue
M Vivid Pink
M White
Metallic Green
Metallic Purple

Most of the colours are matte finish. Even the metallic ones are looking rather matte to me. I didn't know those two were metallic till the sales assistants told me so. I guess I will have to look at those again when I have a chance. They are also matte looking in the swatch picture above too.

The glittery shades are not very glittery either. I'd categorize them as shimmery finish instead. (But I guess I have a rather different standard for shimmers and glitters!) I am very intrigued by the M Midnight Blue. I thought it was the M Black till I swatched it because it is so bloody black! I think it is a good change from mostly bright colours in this collection. I will be worried to use an ultra black gel liner so maybe this is an alternative for someone like me. :)

The texture feels quite smooth. But I feel the Painting Liners are dryer than Bobbi Brown and MAC Gel Liners. I could be wrong though as the testers were exposed to the air as they were never closed, according to the girls. They said these liners are not dry. But since the stock wasn't in when I was there, I couldn't see a real item to compare notes. This was how I observed.

The Painting Liner is 75MYR each. I forgot to check how the content amount but they look like the standard size of gel liners. I am glad Shu makes this collection permanent. Gel liners or any eye liners should never be limited edition except for special shades.

Shu Uemura also released a retractable Portable Eyeliner Brush to be used with the Painting Liners.

Shu Uemura Portable Eyeliner Brush

I like how the brush being retractable and the bristles being uncut. I have had enough experiences with all the so-called natural hair brush turning rough on my skin after being used for some time. I was told brushes with uncut bristles would not have that problem. Well, I have yet to buy one truly uncut brush so I can't vouch for that. But when I tested the brush tester, it was just as soft as those super soft, uncut (and ultra expensive) RMK ones. I am not surprised to see its 85MYR price tag but it better works the magic!

By the way, (for the Malaysian readers), I was told that if you buy the brush at the One Utama boutique now, you can get a brush pouch while stock lasts. The girls did show me the two beautiful pouches but I was too busy playing with the liners and totally forgot to take a pictures of those. I am not sure if other Shu outlets have the same offer. But it's no harm to ask when you go to your Shu store because I really think those are useful. :)

Lastly, I am presenting to you the advertising booklet from this collection. It's so useful that I decided to take pictures of all the vital pages (in case it's not available in all countries.) If you visit your Shu store, please do ask for this booklet as there are step-by-step makeup guide for different problematic Asian eye shapes. Of course it promotes only Shu products but you get the general ideas. :)

You can see from the cover that Painting Liners are made to be mixed and matched!

Review/FOTD/Swatch: Dior 5 Couleurs Designer All-In-One Artistry Palette 408 Green Design, Swatch: 208 Navy/508 Nude Pink/708 Amber Design

UPDATE 16/May/2009: I replaced a better FOTD for this product. :P

I was running errands in a shopping mall and walked past a Dior counter. Naturally my eyes strayed toward the counter display. Then there it was, the new Ionic Eyes Collection. Of course I had to double back to check it out quickly. I have to say that it was not a waste of time!

I had been quite disappointed in the past few Dior 5-colour eye shadow palette collections. Therefore, I wasn't expecting much from this collection either. It turned out that the new 5 Couleurs Designer All-In-One Artistry Palettes are much to my taste even though they are of gradational scheme (which is more commonly found in Asian brands.) I don't think I had seen Dior with such creation before. I guess there is always a first in everything.

The 2 neutral quints looked quite nice on the display, but what really caught my attention were the green and navy palettes. I was debating hard on which one to acquire (or both!) I eventually decided to get 408 Green Design first.

I skipped that 208 Navy Design basically because my beloved Sephora Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Beethoven contains quite a few similar shades. Though I knew the Dior version has totally different texture and finish, I wanted to make sure it worked for me before making any further purchase. Further more, there is a cream liner in the palette now and I was not sure if the power products may mess up the cream liner. Lastly, my poor experiences with most cream liners creasing on me also prevented me from getting both...

Let's look at the palettes now.

Dior 5 Couleurs Designer All-In-One Artistry Palette

Ionic Eyes Collection, 2009

We have 208 Navy, 408 Green, 508 Nude Pink and 708 Amber.

008 Smoky is not part of the collection in Malaysia.

NOTE: All Dior 5-Colour Palettes go by numbers. For instance, all Iridescent palettes end with 9 while Designers ends with 8. You don't have to worry about the names being different. So long as the numbers are the same, the palettes will be the same.

The colours of 008 Smoky Design on Dior site are wrong. I think this picture HERE is 008 Smoky Design???

Also, I am not sure if any of the other palettes (or this entire collection) is limited edition. The sales assistant I spoke didn't know. I wasn't aware 408 Green Design is Asia Exclusive till I cam home and searched the Net!

Product Description:

Dior has created 5 COULEURS DESIGNER, an ultra-professional and totally
new version of the mythic 5 COULEURS palette. Five different textures
have been brought together in a single case to create eyeshadow styles
through layering.

1-BASE light, 2-COLOR iridescent, 3-SHADE satinity, 4-SHINE pearlescent,
5-LINER mat
represent the 5 essential steps used by professional makeup
artists to draw attention to the eyes and create ultra-graphic eye
makeup looks.

Dior innovation: Pigments are blended into a liquid phase rich in
emollient compounds. As a result, the powders are extraordinary soft,
transparently drap the skin, perfectly bind and allow every layering.

Light yet intense, the four 5-shade palettes created by Tyen are truly
sublime. Resolutely Couture, these four new harmonies have been designed
to resemble the palettes of professional makeup artists: based on a
central color, each palette lets you create customized makeup looks with absolute precision. - Dior

Colour/Texture:

This is how 408 Green Design looks like on my arm. I find it difficult to swatch all 5 Couleurs Designer palettes as they are very sheer on the arm. However, they are well-pigmented on the lids. I think it's probably because there are 2 almost transparent shades (Base 1 & Shine 4) in the palette so they have to work with other colours to show their true identities.

Base 1 - an almost transparent colour loaded with super fine champagne gold shimmers. This texture (Light) feels almost solid butter like.

Colour 2 - a light seaform in satiny metallic finish. This texture (Iridescent) feels similar to what's in the Iridescent quints, slightly wet and creamy feel.

Shadow 3 - a deep dark smoke green in a more muted satin finish. Texture (Satinity) is very smooth but yet firm to the touch.

Shine 4 - a high shine super fine glittery reflects in the colour of transparent seaform. Colour's almost invisible till applied on the lids. Very sparkly! Texture (Pearlescent) feels like Base 1, solid butter!

Liner 5 - a cream liner in muted dark smoke green (almost black). The colour is very similar to Shadow 3 but slightly deeper. Texture (Mat) is creamy and smooth. It's glides on lids easily and holds the colour well. Not sure if it's waterproof but it doesn't smudge nor transfer.

FOTD

Packaging/Price:

The new palettes are more or less the same as all other Dior 5 Colour palettes. There are slight changes and I have taken pictures to show you.

1. There is a silver stripe along the cover.

2. It has a plastic insert that indicates the purposes of all 5 shades.

3. It includes a soft liner brush which is a bit awkward to use because of the mini handle.

4. It has a diagram on how to utilize the colours.

I feel it's a very much Asian makeup packaging design. You'd see this in Kanebo Lunasol or Shiseido MAQulliage. (I think Asian makeup packaging is all into details!) And now Dior 5-Couleur Designers is catching up too. I have a feeling the Vietnam born Dior cosmetic photographer, Tyne has something to do with this. :)

Hmm, I should not speculate further. All I can say is that I love the packaging details!! Please have a look at my pictures below.

It is too early to say if the powder shadows will mess up the cream liner. But since these eye shadows are not powdery, my guess is not. (I have 2 Shu Uemura eye shadow palettes containing both powder and cream products and they aren't messy at all because the powder products are not powdery.)

The price for this palette is 194MYR or $58USD (according to Temptalia), slightly more than Iridescent ones. It has 4.4 g. / 0.15 oz. of product in total. It's not cheap but it's Dior.

My Verdict:

Love is in the air! That's what I think about this palette. I love how the deep dark green works so well with all the transparent high shine sparkling light ones. They don't look overly done even for daytime. It's the result I wanted to see in Lunasol eye shadows but couldn't. However, what I like the most is the liner! I don't want to name all the cream liners creased on me. But I want to tell you this liner doesn't! I wore it from 5am till 6pm and the liner stayed put for the whole 13 hours!!! Take that!

You might be wondering if the colour payoff is good enough. I say yes. I normally have problems with such gradational colours from other Asian brands but I have no problem with this Dior version. They are not easy colours to swatch so the pictures I posted above may indicate otherwise. Base 1 and Shine 4 are particularly highly emollient so it's difficult to show the colours in the pictures. But because of their shimmer and sparkling characters, they will show on eyelids.

I have not been so excited about Dior eye shadows for a long time and this new collection makes my heart skip. Love it!

Question: Commonly asked and How to behave like a lady...

So... Tell me, "Do you get paid for doing reviews?"

No one has paid me a cent for doing reviews. (I wish!) I do have few paid ads on my blog but those are not makeup related (yet). And the amount paid is chicken feet compared to the amount I spend on the makeup I review. (Don't ask me how much I spend a year!) Honestly, who doesn't like money? Pay me if you wish but I won't simply say flattery words for paid reviews either. So there!

"Do you get discount buying makeup?"

No, not yet. (Hint hint!) And I've only been to two makeup sales so far, believe it or not. And those were just the small scale in-house type. (If you have to know the specifics: Becca - before it went out of business in Malaysia and T. LeClerc - before it changed the distributor.) I haven't even been to any of the famous warehouse sales in KL either! :( I want to though. I seriously do. Which makeup addict doesn't want to buy makeup at much lower prices? But I have a full schedule outside the makeup world which prevents me from going to all those super sales because they require long queueing time. That luxury spare time is something I can't afford. Sigh... What I get is what you get, too. For instance, Sephora's having 15% off (still is?) and I asked my trusted makeup buddy in the US to pick up 2 items for me. :)

PS: I totally forgot to mention that after I reviewed Arissa Studios products, the local distributors contacted me saying they would give me some discount if I want to do further purchase. I have yet to take up the offer. I am not sure if I want to as not all its products are worth getting...

"Could you take pictures of your makeup collection? It must be HUGE!"

I did that once but I thought it was a rather useless post afterwards. What's the point of taking makeup stash when it's constantly changing? Ha! And I do NOT have a huge collection, either. Repeat: I do not have a huge collection. I don't like clutters, period. And I use my makeup. No matter how gorgeous it is in its packaging, I will use it. Therefore, if something's not working, it has to go. I don't care how it departs either so long as it's not wasted and goes to a better home than sitting idly in my cabinet.

"Could you do a tutorial on blush application?"

I've considered this long and hard. I have also tried to dissect makeup application by making step-by-step photos. But I gave up. It's eaten up too much of my precious time. There is no way I will do a video tutorial either because I don't even own any camcorder!

Come on, when I don't even bother to record my son's growing up with a video camera, why would I be bothered to record how to apply makeup? I believe in live to the moment. When my son's playing, I play with him. I am not the type of mom that says, "Look here! Look into the camera. Say mommy... Can you say mommy???" while my son's playing or doing something. I believe I'd miss out all the interesting things if I did that. I'd rather join him and play till we are both exhausted. Then I may snatch a picture or two just for the record. (I do have an extensive collection of family photos!)

Well, The truth is, I am not very good at makeup application. There, I said it! And I have low, coarse, manly voice and trust me, you don't want to be scared. I'd recommend many other excellent blogs with live tutorials if you e-mail me. But no, I am not good at it, and I have no time, and I am anal-retentive to do such video clips so there will be no end to it! Therefore, I apologize to my readers who have asked me to do tutorials. It's just not my thing.

Those were just some of the commonly asked questions...

Now, let's talk about a more interesting (peculiar?) question I was asked recently. I did a post on How do I look like a million dollars for a big night out? And then I received an e-mail asking,"I don't have a chance to attend big events. What you said will not apply to me. However, could you please share your opinions on dress code and how to behave like a lady in everyday life?"

Hmm, now this is something I have to sit down and think hard. Dress code? And what's my take on proper behaviors for a lady? Gosh, I am totally not a lady by any names and I have behaved poorly in the eye of public before. (Learnt my mistakes, of course!) I am certainly not a guru on this subject...

Well, I honestly don't have much to say on "dress code"... I believe so long as your outfit is colour coordinated, and appropriately dressed according to your age and place, you are perfectly fine. I bet anyone knows better than wearing a pair of high heels strolling in a park, right? Other than that, I think dressing truly depends on individual preferences.

However, I will try my best to share with you some of the what (not) to do as a lady... I think the question itself is more of a behaviour oriented one. By the way, all these rules only apply when you are in the public. Whatever you wish to do at home is your own business! See no evils, do no evils! :P

1. Don't adjust your underwear - Go find a private place please. It's not for the public to see how you pull the bra straps, cup your breasts, and how sexy or uncomfortable your panties may be. Hey, if they are too big or small, get rid of them and find something according to your size and shape! It is no lady to do so in the public.

Speaking of which, I have to share a horrid experience I once had with you all. When I went back to visit my parents in Taiwan couple of years back, showy underpants (i. e. G-strings) were so very popular. It was a fashion statement for the young (and some not-so-young) to wear them coming out of the pants/jeans/skirts by little bit (higher) so people could (sort of) see/guess what you wore underneath. Nope, I am not talking about Hipster. This was a fashion trend to purposely show the muffin tops! I WAS HORRIFIED!!!

2. Don't apply makeup - I don't think it's proper to touch up lips after a meal right at the dining table. I know many people do but it's a pet peeve for me. Why can't you make an excuse to the restroom where you can do it properly and precisely? And since we are on the subject, don't ever, never apply makeup in the pubic. I once saw a very skillful girl applying liquid eyeliner on a fast moving, wobbly subway train in the rush hour in Hong Kong. I could observe how many people staring at her as it was the most amazing sight. (Well, she was good at it, nevertheless.) But don't you think we as ladies should be a little bit more mysterious? Do this in private please! And get up early to do your makeup if you have to spend a lot of time on it.

3. Don't pick your teeth - Gosh! I don't know where to begin! I don't care how great you are able to cover your mouth, just don't do this at the dining table. Regardless what you use - a toothpick or a dental floss pick, it's just not right by my book. Why can't you make a trip to the toilet, floss up (or even gurgle with mouth wash if you wish), then touch up your lip colour at the same time. You can really use the toilet after a meal too, can't you? Why must you do this in front of other diners?

4. Only dab your mouth, not wipe - I learnt this in a civic class, seriously. The teacher taught us to only dab the mouth in the pubic, not wiping it from one end to the other and surrounding areas too. Just dab! That's how a lady does. Well, I thought she was nuts to say so at first but after trying it out, I did feel and thought it's a more lady like behaviour. I follow it by heart now.

5. Don't cross your legs if you wear a short skirt - Oh, I know how much I love sitting with my legs crossed! But imagine risking of showing what's underneath when I have on a short skirt! Come on, you don't need to show the sexy panties you are wearing (or what's more) in the public! My rule is anything above my knee cap (when I am sitting down) is a no go. Tilt both of you legs to one side instead. Now that's sexy!

PS: If you must do it when wearing a long skirt, the skirt has to be roomy enough to do so or else!

6. Don't ever never tell another lady "You look tired" - Oh my God! Did you just say that to me? How rude!

And of course you don't ask other people's age, salary, or how much is the dress/bag/shoes another person's wearing and etc. (or announce your own! Thank you reader lynettepleasant! How could I forget that???!!!) And try to stay away from street slang in a conversation whenever possible. Those are just elementary! There are a lot more I can go on bitching about but the above were what came to my mind at the moment. Please feel free to share your opinions with me even if you don't agree with what I said. :)

Review/Swatch/FOTD: Chanel Levres Scintillantes, Swatch: Le Vernis/Rouge Allure, Lumieres Celestes Collection, Summer 2009

UPDATE: 01/September/2009: I have given up on the two shades I bought. They are gorgeous but really not for me. I looked like a witch with those on. I am so sad as they are beautiful colours. But my lips are just not made for them. I will have to try lighter shades from Glossimer the next time. If you can wear red, the two colours I bought are really good. I will not change my opinion about these glosses as they are of excellent quality. I just purchased the wrong colours for my lips.

UPDATE 20/April/2009: As promised, the 2 nail polish shades from this same collection. :)

Chanel Le Vernis 495 Mica Rose, 497 Cosmic Violine (Limited Edition

NOTE: 497 Cosmic Violine is more plum than brown. Gorgeous! I did about 2-3 coast for both shades.

I had received many requests for the review of the new Chanel Lumieres Celestes Collection ever since I uploaded some pictures on my Flikr account. I didn't know I might be the first one to swatch the whole collection but that's what I had been told... Weird, I couldn't believe that for once, Malaysia has something so fast! We tend to fall behind time for most collections... Hmm.. Anyway, I won't hold you up with more gobbledygook and get straight to the review bits. Hope this review helps you deciding on purchase (or not) and colour choices, too. :)

Chanel Levres Scintillantes,
Lumieres Celestes Collection, Summer 2009

I dug around the net but only found Temptalia has the complete information and excellent pictures. (Few other sites used her pictures too but hers was the first blog to mention this collection.)

This picture below is the ad I received from our local Chanel. I just took a picture of it. :) You can see all 8 shades lined up.

Swatches of all 8 shades

122 Nebula - Parma pink sparkling with blue, white and violet pearlizers
124 Venus - vivid pink with gold and pink mica
126 Silex - coral busrting with coppery and rosy reflectors
128 Météore - rosy copper
129 Cosmos - red-brown sprinkled with gold
131 Mica - tender, sweet and opalescent pink
132 Mirage - starry dark violet
134 Jupiter - red boosted with matching pearlizers

As you can see, there are 2 limited edition shades - 129 Cosmo and 134 Jupiter. And let me tell you that these are the most beautiful ones among the lot! I only found out the two I liked the most are the limited edition after I swatched them. Argh, why or why???!!! Now I really had to get them or else!

So I did. Now I finally bought my very first Chanel Glossimers! The famous Glossimers that many people love. I had never really gotten into Chanel Glossimers because of the doe-foot applicators and colours didn't grab my attention. But I simply couldn't pass these two. Just let me show you how they look up close.

Chanel Levres Scintillantes 129 Cosmo, 134 Jupiter

**PS: The model wore 131 Mica in this photo.

Swatches

So what's the story behind buying these two glosses since I never bought any Chanel Glossimer for myself? I guess the big disappointment I got from viewing YSL Golden Gloss Pur the day earlier was part of the reason why I was so in love with this collection. After seeing those Golden Glosses WITHOUT any golden shimmers, I walked away from the YSL counter feeling pissed off. How on earth could YSL make Golden Glosses WITHOUT those stunning golden shimmer???!!! It's like having a mouth without teeth!!! What's the use??? (Well, I did learn to know that many people appreciate those Golden Gloss Pur having no shimmers... But I am too used to the idea of Golden Gloss = Dazzling Shimmers to accept the toned down version...)

Therefore, when I saw these extra glittery, highly shimmery Glossimers, I just had to play with them. And I ended up buying two because they reminded me so much of those YSL Golden Glosses! And I think the shimmers in the Chanel Lumieres Celestes Collection are more refined those in the YSL Golden Glosses and they are just equally as shimmery and glittering! What's not to love when I am such a magpie for blings!

Apart from the finely milled shimmers in these glosses, the colours themselves are deep, deep, deep. I can see see them on my medium pigmented lips even with the lightest shade. (Hey, since I got the chance to try out brand new testers, I had to help myself trying them on me or else!) And that's exactly why I knew 129 Cosmo and 134 Jupiter look best on me. To think that I actually purchased a RED LIP GLOSS!!! Wow, what's wrong with me???!!!

I am telling you not just the colours are out of world beautiful but its texture is of top quality. Yes, they are more gluey than many other glosses, (I wouldn't call these sticky as Make Up For Ever Super Gloss won the title for that!) and it's this thick creamy texture helps the colours stay longer. Oh, there is no fragrance in these glosses either. Yay!

FOTD - 129 Cosmo

I sipped coffee before taking the picture so the gloss was smeared a little.
This colour looks plum and swatched plum but a bit red on me. I guess my lip colour's playing a trick...

Packaging/Price:

In the past, I had passed on Chanel Glossimer partly because of its doe-foot applicator. I prefer a brush and I still do. Other than its see-through tube, I won't give these glosses high mark on packaging. They are ordinary on this part.

And of course being Chanel means these are expensive. You pay 84MYR / $27USD for a tube of 5.5 g. / 0.19 oz. gloss to play with. Worth it? I have to say yes!

My Verdict:

I am going to say this one last time. If you love shimmery, glittery, staying glosses without scent, you have to check these out. I am sure you can find a colour suits you among the 8. And if you like red gloss, this limited edition 134 Jupiter is a MUST-HAVE! I am not fond of red lip colours but I can wear this and love it every minute! And did you see those blueish cool coloured shimmers in that 129 Cosmo? They make Cosmo glam and mysterious! And Cosmo is the most perfect name for that shade!

Go get them, girls!

Ingredients:

Lastly, these Chanel Rouge Allure were chosen to be part of this collection in Malaysia. But they are not new shades I think. I just thought to add the swatches here for those who are interested. I can't really commend on the lipsticks as I don't know about them much. I do think the colours are very rich and texture is creamy. However, I think they are a tad dry for my lips and too pigmented and not shiny enough for my liking.

Also, I forgot to swatch the 2 nail polish colours from this collection as I was too indulged in playing with those glosses. I will try to get the swatches and update this post later.

Review/FOTD: Clarins Powder Blush 80 Raspberry, Natural Temptation Collection, Spring 2009

UPDATE: This is a swatch comparison of Clarins Powder Blush 80 Raspberry and MAC Mineralize Skinfinish Petticoat in response to reader lynettepleasant. The two colours are totally different. I think, Clarins Powder Blush 80 Raspberry is probably closer to Chanel Joues Contraste Narcisse...

This blush 80 Raspberry is a new colour released as part of Clarins Natural Temptation Collection, Spring 2009.

On Clarins UK, 70 Clementine is also included in this collection. I am not sure if it's a new or old colour. Clarins USA includes yet a different colour, 20 Rose (an old colour) in the same collection. In Malaysia, we just have 80 Raspberry. Confusing? Not sure why they always have different stuff for different countries... Well, at least I know that 80 Raspberry is definitely a new colour in all places. Or is not? :P

No matter...

Clarins Powder Blush Clarins Blush 80 Framboise - Raspberry

Clarins Natural Temptation Collection, Spring 2009

**I forgot to ask if this is limited edition. Looks like it's so as I no longer see it listed on Clarins USA. But I can't be 100% sure! Therefore, I will not tag it under Limited Edtion item. I will change it if I can confirm this.

Colour/Texture:

It looks a lot more intensely pigmented in pan than swatched. I probably wouldn't have bought it if I didn't get to swatch it as the colour reminded me of a cooler version of Shu Uemura Glow On P Pink 30 I once owned, which was very strong coloured that I had to use a skunk brush to tone down the heat.

But Clarins Powder Blush colouring is more natural and much less pigmented in comparison. Thus, it's a lot safer for me to use because I can build it up to the intensity I desire instead of making a mistake with one big blob of pink on my cheeks. I like its subtlety as I prefer natural looking blush than statement making ones.

This blush doesn't have the complicity I am used to in Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush. It's a straight up cool pink without extra shimmers or multiple colour dimensions. The powder is firmly pressed into the pan so it's not powdery. I guess that's why it's buildable because you don't pick up too much colour with a single swipe.

The colour is quite lasting. But I am not the best person to judge a blush staying power as I have dry skin and don't have problem with blush fading away from my cheeks anyway. I don't recall retouching my cheeks in my entire makeup life time!

Anyway, here are 2 FOTDs I did with 80 Raspberry. For some funny reason, I used both green eye shadows and the exact same lipsticks in both. Time to try this blush with other combinations! *_*

FOTD 1

FOTD 2

NOTE: It could be Make Up For Ever Full Cover #4 is no longer a matching shade for me so there are white patches on my forehead here and there in this failed FOTD. It could also be Pupa Professionals Triple Actions Foundation 02 too sheer for me when used dry (so I should have layered it more.) Either way, this has been a problem I have to deal lately whenever I used the two products. One of them has to go I guess. How can I take the risk of going out looking well made up but with white patches all over???!!! Grrr...

The texture is soft and smooth. But it's no where as silky as my beloved Chanel Joues Contraste. (Those are the queens of blushes!) However, I am not saying that Clarins Powder Blush 80 Raspberry is worthless. It still has very nice texture! It is slightly more powdery compared to my Euro Joues Contraste (as those are baked). But it's still very firmed packed so the powder is not loose and won't fly around at all. This slightly softer texture helps the sheer pigmented blush releasing and building colour.

There is a light sweet scent in this blush. It doesn't smell so when applied. And I actually like the scent! But I have to point this out in case you have trouble with perfumed blushes.

Packaging/Price:

This is how it looks like from outside. It's exactly the same size and shape as Clarins Colour Quartet For Eyes. Good for easy stacking if you have a good collection of Clarins makeup. I like how Clarins synchronize its product designs.

I want to point out that the brush in this compact is very good. I can actually use it to apply the blush. The brush is angled and flat and the handle is big enough for my hand. And the bristles are soft on my cheeks too. I don't see good blush brushes included in most blush compact. Clarins has certainly done a good job in its packaging.

This is retailed for 110MYR / 29.50 USD. In terms of dollar exchange, it's slightly more expensive here as 110MYR is roughly 30.54USD at the moment. This product is 5 g. / 0.17 oz. It's more than a Chanel Joues Contraste and cheaper too. Though it's not as complex and refine, Clarins Blush is definitely worth the price it charges.

My Verdict:

If you had read my review on Clarins Powder Blush 40 Coral, you'd probably noticed that I have maintained roughly the same view on Clarins Powder Blush in general. They are still not as sophisticated and complex as Chanel Joues Contraste but they are of good quality for the price. I think this 80 Raspberry will suit many girls as it's so buildable. And to think that I am warm and can wear a cool blush! However, I won't recommend it to someone who is a lot darker and warmer than me as this probably won't show no matter how you layer it.

Review/FOTD: Josie Maran Cosmetics My Favourite Powders

I spotted Josie Maran Cosmetics on Sephora and its soft feminine colours and sophisticated packaging grabbed my attention. As I check out more of its products and read more about its 100% natural organic philosophy, I decided to to give this brand a try.

I asked a friend in the US to get it for me and she said she has this palette and she really likes it. But she thought it could be too warm for me. Therefore, I asked her to take pictures of her palette for me. Upon seeing those pictures, I knew immediately that this palette was just the kind I would enjoy so I bugged her to make a trip to her Sephora for me. (It's great to have a trusted makeup buddy on the other side of the world! Girl, you know I love you! :P)

Josie Maran My Favorite Powders, Limited Edition

Product Description:

What it is:
An all-in-one powder compact for the eyes, cheeks, and face.

The palette includes five eyeshadows, two blush shades, and a bronzing powder for glowing radiance.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:

- Sephora

The Palette

Colour/Texture:

This limited-edition palette includes:

- Eye Shadow in Chianti (shimmery red plum)
- Eye Shadow in Valentine (shimmery pearly pink)
- Eye Shadow in Cinnamon (shimmery pink)
- Eye Shadow in Embrace (shimmery coppery brown)
- Eye Shadow in Maple (matte soft brown)
- Blush in Fever (soft brown)
- Blush in Passion (fresh pink)
- Bronzing Powder in Beach No. 1 (bronze)

Swatches

The colours of this palette look rather soft and the swatches on my arm also appear to be sheer and pastel. Seriously, that was also my concern when I saw the pictures. But the fact that my friend, who is dark than I am, said the palette's very pigmented and she actually worried it may be too warm for me, I was sure it would not be sheer on my face. Therefore, I quickly applied the colours on my eyes and cheeks. I can merrily announce you that despite it looks plain and dull in the pictures so far, it's an amazing palette on my face! I can assure you that not only you don't have to worry about colours being sheer, but rather, you have to apply carefully in case you over do your makeup! It's that pigmented!

All the colours, even the lightest shade can be seen very well on my lids. I can't explain why they don't look very strong on my arm. Perhaps it's because I've only swiped each colour twice and the indoor lighting played a trick? I also didn't use any flashlight... Anyway, I am happy to report that this palette definitely has excellent colour payoff.

And the texture is very smooth too! The shimmery Eye Shadow shades are satiny silky and the matte brown Maple feels creamy for some reason. But when swept with a brush, it slightly powdery. Well, actually all shades are slightly powdery in fact! Again, I can assure you this is not a problem. Trust me, after my disappointment with Coastal Scent Ultra Shimmer 88 Eye Shadow Palette, I am very scared of anything that's powdery. This Josie Maran palette, however, is nothing alarming. I actually enjoy it being slightly powdery as it's easy to spread the powder onto my skin that way. And guess what? The colours stay on so well that I have never once seen the eye shadows creased. And the blushes and bronzing powder just cling there till you ask them to leave! With or without a primer, there is not much difference!

Here is the most recent FOTD I did with this palette. I have played with it many times. These are the some older FOTDs , if you are interested. But I reckon I captured the most details in this FOTD below. The flashlight was very strong and I had sunscreen on so there are some whitish washed out patches in the pictures. However, my face was quite normal-looking if you'd see me in person! And I can tell you this palette gives the most polished and sophisticated look for me! I feel like a princess when I use it. :)

FOTD

Packaging/Price:

This palette is very delicately designed. I was attracted to this brand partly because of its packaging. The palette looks and feels like it's made of very thin metal in the colour of champagne gold.

BUT IT IS MADE OF CORN!!!

How cool is that???!!!

There is nothing but Josie Maran printed in the front and a label of the colour details on the back. There is a mirror for viewing but no brushes included. The locking mechanism is good.

I like it being slim and small. I have learned my lesson not getting anymore big palettes after tried a couple of giants. One example comes to mind is the Tarte The Vanity Palette. I swear I really love and use that palette. But it's so bulky that I can't even hold it on my hand when applying makeup. In the end, it just has to sit on the counter for me to dig in. And I thought I'd travel with that Tarte palette more than anything else because it's so complete! But instead of tossing in one monster, I end up bringing a couple of small items instead. It just feels more sense to me!

I do have one tiny bit of complaint about its packaging. I don't like the surface catching so many fingerprints! I clean the palette case more than clean the makeup off my face! LOL

This is an expensive palette if you count it as a whole. It is retailed for $45USD and there is 7.5 g. / 0.26 oz. of products in total. Not a lot in terms of amount but a good mixture of usable colours.

My Verdict:

I love this palette. It's neutral and it has matte colours and I really do love it! Why? Because it creates a well polished look for me! It makes me want to look at myself into the mirror again and again. (And it has turned a few heads so far too...) The colours aren't most exciting but for some reason, they make magic for my eyes and cheeks. I particularly like that warm deep dark plum Chianti. I also enjoy the blushes and bronzing powder too. Though blush Fever may appears rather cool and the whole palette is warm. I don't find Fever clashes with the other colours at all. It turns down the heat actually!

What's more is its ingredients are all naturally organic and nothing harmful for my skin. (I feel safer to use products like this because I use too much makeup!) On top of that, the palette itself is sleek and classic to look at, and small and light weight to tote around (and good for the environment because it is made of corn!) It is still convenient to use this palette even though it doesn't provide tools. This is because each colour compartment is big enough for a brush accordingly. Just take out your favourite brushes to dip into these Favourite Powders! If you can only afford to get one palette a year, this is it!

Review/Swatch: Make Up For Ever Star Powder Iridescent Fuschia 951, Iridescent Orange 952 & Makeup Application: Using Pigments On Lips

I started noticing the brand Make Up For Ever because of its Star Powder years ago. I still remember seeing that lovely sparkling green shadow on the sales assistant's eyes for the first time. It was a gorgeous green with the most amazing shimmers that I had ever seen in an eye shadow, seriously. So I asked what was she wearing... She told me it's the Star Powder 90909. Since then, Make Up For Ever became an important part of my makeup life. And I am safe to say that I am probably one of the few people who own almost all Star Powder shades that have been released up to date. It may sound ridiculous to you but I still keep the long discontinued old packaged old colours!

Having said that, there were 3 colours that I didn't get on purpose! Gosh, why would I ever do that since I love Star Powder so much and I try to collect all the shades whenever and however possible! Hmm, that's because the 3 colours were once stated as NOT EYE SAFE on Sephora site. (However, Make Up For Ever has always maintained all its Star Powders being eye safe even though Sephora said differently. For some reason, that particular statement on Sephora is gone now. My guess is that it finally got the approval?) Whatever the argument was, it's all settled now as it seems.

But just what are the 3 colours anyway? Well, they are the 3 bright, bright, bright red, fuschia and orange that many people shy away from. Believe it or not, even I thought they were not right for me so I just ignored them in the past.

That was till I started mixing Star Powder with QV Lip Balm to make different lip gloss colours. Then it struck me that I didn't have enough red, pink and orange to make lovely glosses. Ha! So I made a trip to the nearest counter to get those 3 unwanted, neglected colours. The counter didn't have Iridescent Red 949 in stock so I grabbed the other two. (Can you imagine that I am still on the waiting list for that Iridescent Red 949? It can't be that popular right? These aren't very pratical shades!) Hmm...

Make Up For Ever Star Powder

Iridescent Fuschia 951, Iridescent Orange 952

Colour/Texture:

Swatches - Dry Application

Scary-looking bright colours, aren't they? I wouldn't dream of using either shade on my eyelids nor cheeks. Hell no! But wait till you see the transformation when mixed with a clear, creamy lip balm or lip gloss!

Now, I normally use QV Lip Balm as it has SPF20. But since I have run out of it now, I had to use Eucerin Aquaphor instead. The finishes are roughly the same with either brand.

Anyway, here are some possible pigment colours for lips. (If you think black or blue are good colours on your lips, then by no means try them!) I also added MAC Pro Pigment Pink Pearl in the picture. That (and perhaps Lovely Lily are about the only MAC Pigment shades I have that can be used on lips... However, I can tell you honesty that I have never put Pink Pearl on my lips before taking this picture as that's really NOT my choice of colour for lips!!!

You can also see Eucerin Aquaphor on the picture too.

I mixed the pigment powder with Aquaphor and applied the mixture on my arm and lips. I purposely only applied one coat on my lips so you can see how the sheer the colours can be. I don't think Make Up For Ever Iridescent Orange 952 is a right colour for my lips - too orangy to be used alone. I always mix it with another colour to tone the orange down. Well, come to think of it, I hardly use just one colour but rather a mixture of few pigments all together. As a result, I don't have a fixed favourite combination. It's always a play-by-the-ear thing! :)

MAC Pro Pigment Pink Pearl Dry Swatch For Comparison

The texture of Make Up For Ever Star Powder is second to none. That's all I can say. It's the most delicate, softest powder ever. And its sheer enough to be muted, if applied lightly. Yet when layered, there are magical super fine shimmers that guarantee grab attention. Whether sheer or heavy, the pigments don't wear off easily. If the texture is just mediocre quality, I wouldn't have collected so many shades!

Packaging/Price:

This following picture depicts its packaging well. You can see how practical the design is. I have always praised Make Up For Ever packaging designs (for most products) because of their no nonsense, functional purposes. Say no more, please have a look.

The Star Powder is now 70MYR/18-19USD. (It was 65MYR when was first introduced to it. Well, time's changed and so has the price...) It yields 2.8g. / 0.09 oz. of product in each jar. Reasonable price for what it offers but certainly not cheap.

My Verdict:

The 2 colours are not for the fainthearted. They are super bald and attention-grabbing. I don't think I'd use them on my eyes unless, if I add a darker shade (i.e. black) to tone down the brightness. But I bought them to be used as glosses so I am not too concerned. I like mixing up Pigment colours so these are great fun. However, I will not recommend these two colours to those who are new to Pigments; those who only use Pigments as eye shadows; or those who aren't interested in brights even if used as lip colours. I must point out that even used as lip glosses, they are amazing sharp colours. They are definitely not the most practical colours in everyday's world. Think before you leap even though these could be just perfect for Halloween!

Question: On Vitamin E Oil and Scar Healing

Recently, a reader read my review on Colonial Dames Pure Vitamin E Oil and asked me if its sister product Scar Care was of any good? And how many times did she need to apply it and etc.

You can click on the picture to buy the product, if you wish...

My reply was:

1. I've never tried Colonial Scar Care so I don't know if it's an effective product;

2. Even if I did try that product, I couldn't not tell her how many times it should be applied as I am not a medically trained doctor.

However, I fully understand the feeling of visiting a dermatologist about (acne) scars and such. I had visited a dermatologist for my hyper-pigmentation (brown spots) and moles. And I felt like a specimen being examined under a microscope! Therefore, I told her that I would do a post about this soon.

Now, here are some of good reads on this subject. Please click on the links if you wish. I found these most interesting and useful since I can't provide much personal experiences (especially on the subject of acne scar healing...)

The Selection and Therapeutic Use of Vitamin E (Facts)

How to Prevent Scarring (Method)

How to prevent acne scars (Method)

Can Vitamin E Heal Scars? (Newspaper Q & A)

Acne Treatment Skin Care (A Blog with lots of information and products)

OK, I only have proof that Vitamin E Oil worked on my brother-in-law's acne scars as I had seen how his face changed from spotty to spotless. But it may have different results for different skin types. And I seriously can't find anything solid enough to back up my own review. I only wrote what I saw and what I knew.

What I believe though, is it's best to use product in its purest form. Therefore, I have always opted for the highest I.U. (International Unit) when it comes to Vitamin E Oil. (Since I am not ingesting the oil, I don't think there is a risk of me poisoned of overdose, eh?) Therefore, this pumping bottle (picture below) has been my best buddy for the longest time. It gives an overnight result for my skin - less visible pores and lines. And it is also useful for healing scars. My 5-year-old son will also ask for the oil when he gets a scratch!!! For the later part (scar healing), I can only say that I see scars fade away faster than without the oil on, but the speed and the amount really depends on individuals.

The Hand and Body Lotion in this picture was part of the package deal. I did try it and liked it but eventually I just stick to my HG Vitamin E Oil instead.

Simple reason: I like it being pure.

Well, things changed a little after I discovered the convenience of these Natopherol Dermal Skin Defense-E packs.

Key Word: Convenience NOT Effectiveness.

Again, there are different types but I still prefer the original form without added moisturiser or sunscreen (even though the other 2 types smell much better...)

I like these being in a capsule form so I can travel with them easily. And the oil isn't as sticky. But of course, it isn't as pure (containing much less I.U.) I use the oil as a mask overnight while using the capsules in the morning to prep my skin. (Of course, I don't use either type everyday as 1. I don't see the point of doing an oil mask daily; and 2. I forget to use the Vitamin E capsules before makeup quite often! )

I am lucky because I never have acne problem so I can't answer the question presented to me with my personal experience. I did, however, experience cesarean and used the oil for the scar. I am happy to report it got rid of most of the scar. I won't for my life post a picture of THAT to show you! Please just take my words for it. It really helped healing that big chunk of scar. It's now left with very little visible mark.

Please, if anyone is interested in any products, especially skin care, you must try it out on your arms or backsides (if you must) in case of allergies. Please don't dump anything foreign directly onto your face without testing or else you may just regret. I had done such stupid deeds before so I can tell you the pain and suffering was greater than I could imagine. (Well, it's largely more of psychological suffering than physical pain as I got unnecessary breakouts for trying out products and couldn't wear basic makeup for days! I was horrified that I had to go out with a naked face!)

So my answer is YES regarding to Vitamin E Oil and scar healing. I truly believe it works.

I believe for skin care, it's best to use natural products in their finest, purest original forms.

I also believe it's best to avoid perfume and chemical laden or multiple-processed products (which usually found in most high end department store brands.) I don't see the point of paying big bucks for those products even though I do prefer high end makeup (as I believe you pay for what you get in makeup in general.) I also believe it's best to leave skin alone when not using makeup. So you definitely see me without any makeup at home! I always let my skin breathe when I don't pile makeup on my face.

And treat your skin kindly from within by drinking lots of water and eat healthy and natural food. Leave any harmful and unnatural processed food as occasional treats only. Try to leave out premade food from your cooking or baking too!!! Make your food from scratch whenever possible!

OK, I am totally side tracked... I'd stop right here. I don't want to sound like a health freak...

Review/FOTD: Estee Lauder Fleur de Lys Shimmer Powder, Fuchsia Now Collection, Spring 2009

I had seen this palette reviewed by a couple of beauty bloggers and I fell in love with it looking at those beautiful pictures. As Estee Lauder in Malaysia only carries its limited edition items in KLCC and Gardens (I think), these items aren't readily available to most people even though Estee Lauder is quite a common brand found in most department stores.

That's a shame actually. Judging from my own experience, Estee Lauder has stepped out of its stigma of being Old Ladies' Makeup (if there was ever such a thing!) I can assure you that its makeup now is vast in range and wide in colour choices. And yet still is aiming at high quality, and practical for ALL AGES!

Estee Lauder Limited Edition Fleur de Lys Shimmer Powder,

Fuchsia Now Collection, Spring 2009

From the Spring 2009 color collection Fuchsia Now - Estee Lauder
.

Please take everything in green with a grain of salt.

This palette is BY NO MEANS a highlighter!

Colour/Texture:

The lovely shimmery over-spray came off just after the first application. That was not a bad thing though as this powder is WAY TOO PIGMENTED for me! And I really could use a toned down version of it. But don't be conned by getting it if you want the shimmers as they won't stay.

Close-up of before and after over-spray came off

Swatches of individual shades
(after the over-spray came off)

You can see after the over-spray is gone just by one application. The only colour remains shimmery is the center plummy flower. The medium lilac shade is arguably a pearly finish while the beige pink highlighter is most definitely matte on me.

This is a picture of all the colours lined up, including the swatch of the 3 colours mixed together, which I applied with the Laura Mercier Finishing Brush posted below.

I am also showing you how the mixed colour look like on my Laura Mercier Finishing Brush. It's quite accurate in real life, too.

The colour on my Etude House Duo Fiber Cheek Brush is NOT the 3 colours mixed. It is the colour of the 3 shades from Estee Lauder Fleur de Lys PLUS Make Up For Ever Duo Mat Powder Foundation 202. I had to tone down the already mixed cheek colour with more foundation on the top because it's just too pigmented resting on my high cheek bones!

Swatch of 3 colours mixed on Laura Mercier Finishing Brush

This is the FOTD result of my effort...

You can see other previous FOTDs with this powder here, if you wish.

The texture of this powder is soft and smooth but powdery. Because of its powdery character, it has to be used carefully if you want to use individual colours. When swirled the 3colours together, the plum and lilac often stain the beige pink. Therefore, I don't think anyone in the right mind will use this as a highlighter UNLESS the person is willing to spend a lot of time dealing with small bits of highlighter and of course a small brush too! Those highlighter patches are just too small to be practical in my opinion.

Honestly speaking, I can assure you that this compact is a BLUSH and BLUSH ONLY. I don't care if you are a lot darker than I am, it is just a BLUSH for anyone and everyone. Look else where for a true highlighter then. The risk of getting the 2 very pigmented colours is too high to grant this to be used as a highlighter. It is only right to use the 3 colours mixed as a BLUSH. Go ahead and use the 3 colours as eye shadows, if you must use them separately. But a word of warning - some people are allergic to reddish colours on their eyes.

If using as a blush, it's a statement making blush for light to medium skin tones and a gorgeous plum on darker ladies. I have to use the sparsely tapered Laura Mercier Finishing Brush to pick up the colours. And I also have to tone it down further with a foundation or loose powder on top of the already toned down blush. Hmmm, I don't know. Perhaps I am just not used to a very striking blush...

Packaging/Price:

All Estee Lauder Powders I have tried so far are of same size and shape. With no exception, this Fleur de Lys Shimmer Powder Compact is just as big (as all other powders from Estee Lauder) in both packaging size and content (0.45 oz. / 13 g.) comparing to many other brands.

It is definitely a good deal for the price of $32USD.

My Verdict:

This is a pigmented lightly shimmered plummy blush on me (when used all 3 colours lightly together.) This is NOT a highlighter no matter how I tried. I have tried the 3 colours as eye shadows too and the result was lovely. But I am aware that reddish colours aren't suitable for sensitive skin and neither Estee Lauder site nor anywhere on the packaging state that it can be duped as eye shadows. Therefore, I don't recommend using it as such.

I do think anyone, regardless cool or warm, light or dark can utilize this compact without any problems. The colours swirled together can be toned up or down. And if you want it cooler, just use more lilac. Warmer? Add more plum from that big flower in the center then. Apart from not being a highlighter, it's a great blush without a doubt!

This blush is very smooth on and stays put. (Sometimes I wish the colour will fade but it doesn't!) If you have problems of blush slipping off, this is one blush to try for sure. If you think plum won't work for you, this is also one universal plum indeed. There aren't many plum blushes that I can wear but this one is the exception. I highly recommend it now. And to think I hated it so much at the beginning! Some stuff just grow on you!

Review/Swatches: Korres Guava Lipstick #13 Natural Pink & #34 Nude

UPDATE (02/June/2009):

#13 Natural Pink got some lumps on the top after used for a while. I am not sure what caused it but I hated the lumpy surface because it scrubbed my very dry lips! Eventually I gave it away to someone who wanted to try. This is not a problem with #34 Nude. I really can't explain why... Anyway, I can't find Korres makeup in Malaysia so I will not be too worried. But if you want to try these lipsticks, do check them out first. Perhaps I just got an old tube. *_*

I'd never seen Korres as a makeup company. I always thought it sells hair products and that's about it. I vaguely remember seeing its hair stuff when I was still staying in the CBD and ventured to KLCC, where I THINK was the place I saw Korres... And if my memory serves me correctly, it was at the Wastons' in KLCC where I spotted this brand. I could be way off though as it's been some years and I hardly go to KLCC nowadays so please don't ask me to confirm this!

I wouldn't have thought of trying them were it not for my younger sister-in-law tried them in San Francisco during her last trip. And she called me all the way to tell me that I had to at least buy one to try. So I did.

And guess what? I asked another friend to get one more after a month or so. Obviously it had something going for me so I bought the second piece!

Korres Guava Lipstick

I thought this was a lipstick of guava shade... (You know, colour of the pink guava fruit...)
It turned out to be a lipstick with guava extract in it...

Product Description:

What it is:
Longwearing, creamy, antioxidant lip color with antiaging benefits.

What it is formulated to do:
Korres Guava Lipstick lavishes your lips with highly pigmented formulas that deliver intense, enduring color. Fall in love with the pure, vivid shades that pamper your pout with an infusion antioxidant and vitamin C-rich guava extract.

What it is formulated WITHOUT:
- Parabens
- Sulfates
- Petro-Chemicals
- GMO

What else you need to know:
This luscious lipstick is available in gorgeous shades that range from natural pink to wine red. - Sephora

Colour/Texture:

Korres Guava Lipstick #13 Natural Pink

I think this is what I'd say My-Lip-But-Better colour for me. The colour swatch on my lips is true to life.

Korres Guava Lipstick #34 Nude

This is a more glam version of my lip colour. Not the most natural shade but a very sexy and classy one. It's a tad darker and has more red and rose than #13 Natural Pink. It is definitely not a nude for my medium pigmented lips. The colour on my lips is also very true to life.

These are some of the creamier lipsticks I have tried (owned). I wouldn't have bought them were it not because of the recommendation. The reasons are simple:

- They are very pigmented. (I used to prefer sheer lipsticks.)

- They are creamy but not shimmery and not as shiny. (I am like a magpie, attracted to shiny makeup.)

Basically, they are not what I seek in a lipstick. But why then, I got the second shade?

Well, my experience of #34 Nude taught me a lesson (or two), which were:

- I can wear pigmented lipsticks, provided it's not too dark.

Sheer ones may make me look younger and more fresh. The more pigmented lipstick make me more energetic and my lips appear to be sexier. (Well, what my husband said anyway!)

- Creamy lipsticks last a lot longer and I don't have to watch over my lips every time I eat or drink.

The colour just stays there. It is no doubt that the colour fades over time. But it endures longer hours in comparison. And creamy lipsticks are more moisturising than slippery shiny/shimmer ones. They seem to glue onto the lips and form a barrier so my lips don't dry up or crack as fast. This is particularly effective when I am in an air-conditioned room.

So Korres Guava Lipsticks are all the things I mentioned above - pigmented, long-lasting, creamy and moisturising. And I don't think I have smelt any scent. Upon checking the ingredient list, I didn't find any fragrance added either. Oh and most of its ingredients are natural. Thumbs up for that!

Packaging/Price:

The packaging is slim and sleek. just a simple brown metal tube without graphic but product details printed instead. I like the straight forward style.

However, my biggest gripe of this product is its tiny size! I don't want to bore you with grams and ounces so I took a picture of a Korres Guava Lipstick next to other lipsticks. See it for yourself! A picture speaks louder than a thousand words.

Size Comparison

And I thought BeneFit Silky-Finish Lipsticks (3.00 g./0.10 oz.) were small!

Content: 1.8mL or 0.06 Fl. Oz.

Price: 16,60 Euro on Korres or $22USD on Sephora

Indisputably over-priced lipsticks - minuscule in size yet gigantic in price.

My Verdict:

They are without a doubt good quality lipsticks . The texture is different from what I normally use for a change. They make me feel (but don't look) more matured and that's a good thing. I feel elegant and stylish with them on. (I am not sure if any of you have this experience. But sometimes I just feel tacky and tasteless with certain lipsticks on!)

It is worth mentioning that Korres adopts the philosophy of using natural ingredients. But the less than desired amount and the high price tag stop me from trying more colours after I've acquired 2 lipsticks. I'd purchase more (especially deeper colours), if the price weren't so high. (I just don't see the point of spending so much for so little, no matter how great it might be. I always believe there are alternatives when it comes to this situation.) And I am not so sure if using natural ingredients grants Korres to charge consumers so much for a teeny weeny lipstick...

I rest my case...

Review/FOTD: Sephora Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Beethoven

Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Beethoven

Product Description:

What it is:
A palette of eight eyeshadow colors from tattoo-artist Kat Von D.

What it does:
A smoky eye adds an instant air of mystery—create your own with the True Romance Eyeshadow Palette. Designed by reality television star Kat Von D especially for Sephora, this artistic spectrum of shades brings an edgy-glam creativity to your makeup. The sleek black eyeshadow palette is stenciled with silver roses and arrives packaged in a silk-screened black and silver box that is itself a work of art—and inspired by Kat's favorite tattoo. - Sephora

Colour/Texture:

It looks like so on Sephora site...

The Beethoven palette contains the shades:

- Lucifer (matte charcoal black)
- Speed Blue (dark metallic blue)
- Razor Gray (warm gun steel shimmer)
- Tequila (metallic cornsilk shimmer)
- Galeano (metallic medium plum shimmer)
- Sinner (metallic purple black shimmer)
- Rad Purple (matte purple black with purple glitter)
- Leather (matte dark brown)

It looks like so in real life...

The palette is basically TWO quads put together in a case. There are even 2 brush applicators!

But do you notice the difference between the two pictures?

The 4 colours on the right are arranged differently!

The colours on my palettes are put together in this order...

The light blue parts indicate the colour order on the Sephora picture.

I can't explain why but that's how mine looks like.

No biggies I guess.

The Swatches

Isn't this a beautiful lot? I really like the colours chosen. They can create different combinations easily. And for the first time in my life, I actually don't mind the 3 MATTE eye shadows in this palette! I adore them very much in fact! They are beautiful on top of the shimmery ones. And they don't make me look aged. I particularly like how I can use Lucifer (matte charcoal black) wet to tightline. It basically works like a cake liner. The texture is heaven and the pigmentation is strong enough to show in between lashes (when tightlined). When used wet (by mixing it with Make Up For Ever Eye Seal), its texture becomes a little creamy, thus it glides along the lash lines easy. And the effect is a natural black, not a ghostly Gothic look.

All 8 colours are very pigmented. I only swatched them once or twice DRY for the photo above. I didn't use any primer on my arm either. You can see how strong the colours are, even the lightest Tequila (metallic cornsilk shimmer) doesn't need extra effort to make it show on my arm.

The 4 colours on the left are more common but the 4 on the right are quite rare. And if you mix and match with all 8, you get endless interesting results. And did I mention that the texture is heaven? It is!!! The Kat Von D palette isn't as sticky/gluey/wet like Shu Uemura Pressed Eye Shadows. But they apply smoothly and they surely have the power to stay true and non-crease. And NO chalky residues, which was what I worried the most when I saw the glittery Rad Purple. But does that colour stand up to the test or what!!! Sure, it is the most powdery among the lot but its super fine glitters don't interfere with the powder and don't fall out like Urban Decay Midnight Cowboy does! And Rad Purple is such an exceptional rich colour too. Just gotta love it!

Click here for couple of FOTDs I did in the past. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of both purple and blue used in one stored. It's my current favourite combination from this palette. This following picture is an example of the 4 more common shades. A very practical palette.

Packaging/Price:

This palette comes in a box of the exact same trademark Kat Von D design as the palette itself.

The Box

The Palette

Back of the palette

The case feels the same as Arissa Studios Trendy Lip Palettes, smooth and velvety but it doesn't attract much fingerprints and dust. And if there are some undesirable marks on the palette, you can use baby wipes to clean it up easily.

I mentioned it earlier that this palette is a combination of 2 quads and the case is designed accordingly too. There are 2 duo-end brushes applicators. However, they are too small to handle in my opinion. (Most applicators from palettes are useless for me anyway!) The large mirror expands from side to side that's useful for application and touch-up.

My biggest complaint is the tight and narrow lock. It's so tight that I have to force it open all the time and my fingers hurt!!! Grr... It's like it doesn't want me to use it!

This is a Sephora exclusive (but not limited edition) item because Kat Von D is a Sephora brand.

Price: $34USD

Weight: 8 x 0.05 oz.
or 8 x 1.4 g.

Translation: ONLY $4.25USD per colour! Cheaper than many drugstore eye shadows!

My Verdict:

I am not joking that this palette may make it to my Top Ten List of 2009 later. It's that good! I have not had so much joy using an eye shadow palette for the longest time. The colours and texture are simply fantastic. I regret not getting the other True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Ludwig when I got Beethoven. My dear friend who did this custom purchase for me asked me at least twice whether or not I wanted Ludwig. (But since I don't have access to this brand and only wanted to give it a try, I stood firm and just got Beethoven...) Oh well, at least I am extremely satisfied with this purchase.

Kat Von D is not a well known brand and I hope by reviewing this palette, more people will be interested in trying her products. I really think it's a brand with great potential. (Hey, I don't work for her or Sephora so I am not biased!)

This is my favourite Kat Von D Eyeshadow Beethoven tutorial on YouTube.

Unlike my subtle application, she used it dramatically and I hope you enjoy her video too!

Question: How do I look like a million dollars for a big night out?

Yup, those were the exact words found in an e-mail a couple of weeks back. I actually thought it was a spam mail at first! I later realized it was a request from a reader and she was serious about her question too!

My first reaction was, ,"I am a beauty consultant now, eh?" She didn't even know if I knew how to dress properly... Hmm, what could I suggest to help? I never thought of how to look like a million dollars!

So I did a little search on line, in books and fashion mags as I knew I am definitely not an expert in this domain. I found some interesting articles along the way and I have certainly been enlightened! But I don't agree with many things I found... So I'd like to share my thoughts with you. What I write is what I believe and practice myself. Coincidentally, some of them were mentioned in the articles I read too. (I guess I do have some dressing sense, eh?) You don't have to agree with everything I am going to write, of course!

This is strictly a VANITY post.

For The Big Night Out:

A no no for fake fur - You may think rich folks like to wear furs and so you want to try it out with imitations. (Besides, it's not right to wear animal furs!) Whatever... What I think is that these are difficult items to be worn well, bet it authentic or manmade. Most people tend to end up carrying a boa around the neck. Get a feathery hair accessory or even a choker as they are more delicate. Or you can do a top or skirt with feather embroidery. Key point: Use soft small fake animal deco instead of one big chunk, if you really like those stuff.

Don't wear dresses shorter than the keen length - You can have cheeky side splits though. :) But leave mini skirts alone for a fun day out with your man, not at an important event, even if you have beautiful long well-toned legs! If your dress is strappy and you haven't done enough exercise, get a subtle sequined or embroidered cardigan and just button just the very top for the trendy look or simply shawl over the shoulders. Instant rich look. Ha!

Use small bags and try to stick to handheld type - When you are rich, all you need to carry is your platinum cards and a lipstick! You don't see the rich folks tote huge bags (like me) at an important event. I carry all junk inside my Golla backpack because I throw in all my son's stuff. But if I have to attend an important function (with my son around), I take a separate small handbag (best is a clutch) and leave my big bulky bag to my husband or someone I trust or simply store it away in a locker or store room (if available) :P

Try wearing more trouser suits - For extra glamour, go for something in techno fabric (non-shiny, stretchy nylon) worn with a camisole top with or without beads/sequences/deco. For some reason trouser suits look smarter and richer. :) For longer-looking legs (which I really need!), make sure trouser reach the bridge of your foot.

Simple eye makeup, nude cheeks and classic lips - Don't over do the makeup or else you'd look trashy even if you have all the right clothing (and shoes!) Image how Olivia Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy looked like. They would certainly not wear funky, unnatural colours on their faces. But of course, adding a splash of colour (that matches your clothes) or even sparkles and glitters on small areas adds extra glamour and interests and grabs attention. Just remember: less is more. Same thing goes with accessories. They are ACCESSORIES, not the main show!

And make sure your man looks well-groomed - or else your efforts will be wasted! :)

I am not going into what you can do on the INSIDE. That's something learnt, not what we can play with by using material stuff.

Review/Swatches: MAC Liquidlast Liner Powerplum & Disc Black

I have tried very few items from MAC, a brand that doesn't normally work for me... And Luqiadlast Liners would probably be one of the last things that I'd ever think if I visit a MAC store.

So my good friend who happens to be a MAC fanatic had to buy these 2 for my birthday last December. She said she was sick and tired of my praising Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner and how good it was to have a felt tip instead of a brush and blah blah blah. She said she had to ask me to try these two liquid liners with a BRUSH and I would change my mind and stop bitching about Maybelline discontinued my favourite eyeliner in Malaysia. She said she nearly wrote to Maybelline to see if I really didn't secretly work for them! (Well she can be a bit nuts sometimes but I love her all the same.)

So you know the drill. I have been trying these two liners since then and have used them in a couple of FOTDs in the past. And now it's high time to give them a run down.

Do I like them more than you-know-what?

MAC Liquidlast Powerplum & Disc Black

Unfortunately, Powerplum is stated OUT OF STOCK and Disc Black is not even listed.

Stock picture from MAC.

Product Description:

A rich colour liquid eye liner that combines long-lasting wear with a non-smudge, non-flake precision line. Goes on effortlessly. Applies with its own brush to draw a perfectly defined line. Available in a wide range of classic and trend shades.

2.5 ml/0.084 oz

US $16.50

MAC Liquidlast Liner Powerplum & Disc Black

Swatches

Powerplum - Pearl finish, deep plum with red pearl

Disc Black - Pearl finish, lead grey with pink pearl - source

If only I could see the red and pink pearl in these two colours! I must be colour blind.

Put to test:

The first thing I tried was to tightline with Disc Black. If this product is liquid, it must be DRY liquid!! It's CREAM, not liquid, for crying out loud! Liquid is dripping, cream is slimy. (Why can't makeup companies get it right and always confuse me with the product names?)

Photo Evidence - Creamy City!

Therefore, for someone who is used to liquid, this is not an easy gadget to start with. I tried tightlining with Disc Black. I gave up after 2 or 3 strokes as there was not much seen due to its colour and the creamy texture. I didn't see much effect of muted tightlines from using this product. So a NO-NO for tightlining.

I tried lining lower lash lines with both colours and the results were great. The lines were thin enough so my eyes didn't look like punched or just came out of a cosmetic surgery. Thumbs up for that.

I tried the most difficult task (for me at least) - lining upper lines. As I have the typical Asian thick and droopy eyelids, not many liquid/cream/pencil liners stand up to this test without smudging. The lids almost always touch the nicely lined lash lines and make a big mess. Well, once again, I am disappointed. Though not as bad as many others, the eyelids still touched the creamy liner before it dried up and created a little mess. However, it was really little as the liquid is very creamy so the drawn lines stuck to my upper lash lines well. It touched the lids only because it dried up a little slower (due to its thick and creamy consistency.)

I wasn't surprised to say the least... As so far, I have yet to see a liquid eyeliner works as well as Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner FOR ME! And mind you, this is a brush I was using and so I didn't expect it to work this well actually. I normally end up with 2 panda eyes with a brush applicator. I have to give MAC Liquidlast Liner some credits on that brush. It does work its charm.

Although it takes a little more time to dry compared to my HG, these liners are some of the faster drying liquid eyeliners I have tried. And they don't budge after they dry up completely. The colours don't fade away easily either. I don't see much difference after a day of wearing the liners. And they are super easily removed too. These are definitely finer points of MAC Liquidlast Liner.

Packaging/Price:

I think packaging plays a very important part for eyeliners. The types of applicators and how they perform make a big difference for the results desired. I think MAC Liquidlast Liner does an excellent job for its packaging.

The tubes are small - easy to handle and store;

The tubes are transparent - see through the colours;

The brushes are fine and soft - easy to gather the bristles to make sharp lines;

The liquid is thick & creamy - not dripping and less messy.

The only drawback is the labels aren't so good. The product names printed on the tubes have started to fade away and the label of my Disc Black on the bottom of its tube has fallen off. Luckily I can see the colour through the tube.

I think for $16.50USD, it's a good buy even though it's not a lot of product (2.5 ml./ 0.084 fl. oz.) Trust me, you don't need much anyway!

My Verdict:

I admit these liquid eyeliners are not easy for me to use at first. But with a little practice, I can make them work well for me. And they are indeed addictive. I particularly like the colour of Powerplum and I wish Disc Black was a true black!!! (Then maybe I won't mind going through the hell to tightline with it...)

MAC Liquidlast Liners are of good quality and addictive. I am interested in more colours esepcially that Aqualine (stock photo shown above), Inky and Point Black.

But... I am still praising you-know-what more!
