Review/Thoughts/Swatch: Chanel Tokyo Happening Collection 2009

My American makeup buddy asked me to reserve the Asia Exclusive Fleur Celestes Highlighter Palette for her. She'd had her eye on that palette every since she spotted it on Rough Delux. (It was a Tokyo only collection but later spread to other countries. Autumn Mascarade said most items from this collection were also released in the USA but they were practically sold out...) Anyway, I took the chance to try the entire Limited Edition Tokyo Happening Collection 2009 in person. I was hoping to score something for myself too.

Tokyo Happening Collection 2009 Limited Edition

It was not the most enticing display but it's the typical Chanel straight forward style. Upon inspection, I found all colours pastel and light. I guess it was meant for spring as it was first launched in Tokyo and Shanghai in March. (If not mistaken, Shanghai had it on the same day and the entire collection was sold out the next day!)

That stripy Les Tendres Palette on the lower right hand corner of the picture was only a simple highlighter. It was nothing special in my opinion. I have tried to swatch it but the colours didn't show up well on the camera because they were just too sheer. You'll just have to take my words for it.

My attention was on the 3 palettes, especially that London Madness. I don't have a clue why Chanel put in a Landon Madness in the Tokyo Happening?

Whatever...

I fell in love with the pearly banner design immediately. Unfortunately, the sales assistant told me that the gorgeous gold and gray and those beautiful shimmers were all over spray only. The colour hidden underneath was a highlighter in bloody white (bloody white?) Yup, the entire palette was the colour of white once the top layer was swept off and that wouldn't take too long either as the tester I tried in the boutique has lost a plenty of colour. The ever so helpful sales assistant took out a new palette for me to take a picture...

I lost my interests right there. I didn't want to spend a dime on a cheat!

So I moved onto Fleur Celeste De Chanel, the palette that I came for. I could say that it's probably the only palette worth getting in the entire collection as all three colours went all the way down to the pan. None of them were over spray. Thank God for that! (Whoever invented over spray on makeup palettes should be shot dead!) Again, I tested all three individual colours and the mixed shade on my arm but my camera didn't manage to catch anything solid. I apologize for lacking of swatches in this review. They were simply too sheer and pastel under all the tungsten lights in the boutique.

However, I did like the light colours on me. The individual colours were pale pink, pearly white and pale peach. The mixed colour is a light pinky peach. The colour is ultra sheer but yes, it did show on me as a natural flushed look. I loved that.

Though the colours were lovely and natural, they weren't anything close to special. I believe I have more than one item like that in my collection. Seriously, if you have both Benefit Dandelion and Georgia, you could probably whip up a similar shade. Just how difficult it is to find a pale peachy pink blush/highlighter in a makeup addict's stash? Personally, I wouldn't foot out 254MYR for this palette. But if you like what you see in this highlighter and don't mind the high price tag, this is one to get, at least all the colours are solid throughout. And yes, it yields a very natural result, which is what a highlighter supposed to do. I won't recommend this for those who are of darker complexion though. Judge it for yourself with the pictures below...

Fleur De Chanel - The Big Brush

The brush is big and its bristles are very soft though I am not sure of its material. Judging from my experience, it should be some kind of animal hair instead of synthetic... I hardly see face palettes include any brushes nowadays and I think Chanel has done a great job adding in a proper, usable brush. The brush even has its own velvet pouch. How cool is that?

I think Chanel had gone too far by adding a 3D rose on its box. :)

I also swatched the new Glossimer. 4 pastel colours and all looked alike on me! I finally made some swatches shown properly here... But 84MYR for a gloss this sheer? Over my dead body!

I tried out one nail polish (70MYR) and the result was the same as the Gloosimer - sheer and transparent. I gave up. I didn't proceed to swatch all nail polish. They were just down right boring...

All I can say is Chanel Tokyo Happening Collection is NOT HAPPENING!

I love the colors when I first saw them in a magazine but I did hold back on purchasing them since I was afraid they would all be too sheer and blah. Thanks for confirming =)

aww that sucks that it doesn't seem worth it. The flag and flower designs seem pretty unique. I will probably check it out if it comes here because its so gorgeous!

I had a chance for the nail polishes as I sort of collect them, and some of the makeup. Totally was not interested. looks pretty, but too sheer and the color payoff was not worth it.

lol I love how passionate you get in this review! Thanks for the swatches of the glosses, because I'd been lemming Wish (the blue one) but since I already have Galactic I won't need it then! :)

i totally agree with the london madness in a tokyo happening collection, what were they thinking?!
thanks for the helpful honest review, its nice getting a blah review every once in a while in amongst all the raves.

LOL! Not happening! I loved your conclusion~ Yes whoever thought of over spray should be embarrassed!! Can you imagine how ugly that london palette would be after the glitter fell off?! Geesh. The flowery one is really pretty!!
The pastel glosses are... I have no words for them. They're a rip off, hahaha.

Nice designs from Chanel but do not think the color pay off is special and definately pricey! Thanks for the pictures and lovely conclusion that we get to save up for other lovely stuff! :)

Very nice!

maryj0lisa: Your reply made me laugh. That's some strange logic but I totally understand! A reader once wrote to me why I complaint a lot about products while other bloggers tend to have more rave... Well, I have to be picky as I don't want to simply spend money on not so useful products. An average product by my book = is not good enough. A below average product = just eh, Go to HXXX! I don't have to say about the rest... :)

LMAO! I agree and have heard from other people that the Tokyo Collection was a disappointment too. Thanks for confirming this! I was initially sad I didn't get the items online since I'm a sucker for LE items, but pics/swatches have made me feel better about missing out on this.

Did you see the quad with the White Fleurs collection? Thoughts?

jojoba said...

Lina: I haven't seen the quad with the White Fleurs collection yet. Is it supposed to be with thi same collection or later? I forgot which is whcih as the names are similar. LOL.

But I am not impressed by Chanel eye shadow quads in general so that's why I haven't paid much attenton. *_*

Thanks for the review. Being an anglophile, I was really lemming the London madness palette (although I'm not sure what that has got to do with Tokyo too), it's so pretty. But I'm glad I didn't get it now, it's not worth it.

I have to disagree with you on Pearly Banner and the glosses, well, at least one gloss. I have the highlighter and i think it's gorgeous! I don't use it to highlight only, it's very usable as all-over shimmering powder, kind of like Guerlain's Meteorites. I was bummed about the overspray design, though, too. The gloss i've got from this collection is Wish and it's one of my favourite. It is sheer, yes, but it shines like crazy and adds a noticeable blue sparkle to the lips, which looks really pretty and fresh.
Oh, and putting the London highlighter in the same showcase with the Tokyo collection definitely wasn't authorized by Chanel, must've been the store's fail ;)

Marina: I am happy to hear a different voice here. :)

OK, I just called the Chanel Boutique. It's not ths store's fault. It's how they were gievn this collection. The London Banner is there for don't know what reason. There are obnly 2 places to see this collection in Malaysia. One is Pavilion and the other is One Utama New Wing.

I am glad the items work for you. I always say that one man's meat is another's poision. And this collection is my poison... *_*

I am a Chanel person but whatever comes in this collection isn't my cup of tea.

And one other thing, I'd like to know your colouring so if any other readers are interested in the items, at least they have an idea whether or not those will work. Thanks

Hello Jojoba,
It's a good thing tastes differ, isn't it? ;) What would this world be like if all looked alike!
Ok you asked about my colouring, i've got fair skin (NC 15 in MAC), brown eyes and brown hair, and my lips are quite pigmented (kind of the colour that's called Tea Rose or Rosewood in makeup). Hope that helps someone :)

Oh, forgot to tell you - i love your blog :)

Marina: Thanks a lot for the missing info of your colouring!
