Review/Swatch/FOTD/Comparison: Sephora Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette - Metal Orchestra, Limited Edition

UPDATE 31/August/2009: The cream eye shadow in this palette has become very hard and difficult to get the colour off the pan. It's a shame as all other colours are very good. This also happened to the cream eye shadow in Gypsy, the other limited edition palette from Kat Von D. I think all the cream eye shadows need to be reformulated or removed.

UPDATE 08/July/2009: Sephora listed this palette again! If you are interested to buy this, please click here. Not sure how long will this palette stay on Sephora site though...

I know this review came too late as this limited edition eye shadow palette has been withdrawn from Sephora site. However, it is still possible to acquire one from certain Sephora stores while stock lasts. I know so because mine came this way!

My trusted makeup buddy in the US did a huge favour for me by calling different Sephora stores after this palette was discontinued and I just had to have it! If I didn't get this palette, I wouldn't have been able to sleep in peace because it's the only Kat Von D True Romance Eye Shadow Palette that I didn't get my hands on and I honestly liked every single palette I'd purchased! Shoot me if you think I was nuts.

Kat Von D True Romance Eyeshadow Palette -

Metal Orchestra (Limited Edition)

Colour/Texture:

The Palette

There goes without saying that I adore Kat Von D True Romance Eye Shadow Palettes. And there is no exception for this Metal Orchestra. It is simply stunning, stunning, stunning! I don't know why it's not raved much as it should have been. Even if you don't like the colours, look at the quirky names! They'd put a smile on your face too!

Swatches

I noticed that Kat Von D added a cream eye shadow in every limited edition palette. However, all the regular palettes consist of 100% powder eye shadows.

As a blue eye shadow fanatic and smoky eyes lover, I don't know why it took me so long to get this palette???!!! I don't care how many blues I have in my possession, these are must-haves. They may look ordinary in pan but applied extraordinarily. Most of the blues are glittery eye shadows. I find them rather interesting.

Other than the matte Lucifer, the rest of the smoky side are all shimmery with the cream Slayer being the most outstanding, of course. The gradation scheme makes it practical and easy to handle. You can't go wrong with these colours.

NOTE: Metal Orchestra (limited edition) repeats 2 shade found in Beethoven (permanent). They are Lucifer and Razor Gray. Other than that, these are two very different palettes and I must say that I can't favour either. They are both lovely. :)

I have no qualms about the texture either. I have said this over and again that Kat Von D powder eye shadows are on the powdery side but it hasn't been a problem so far. And I actually enjoy its slightly powdery texture as it's excellent for wet application. I do this a lot with Lucifer, which is found in all palettes. Well, it's a basic matte black so why not?

As for the cream shadow, it applies evenly and smooth. And I swear that it has never creased on me, not one bit. I am hoping that Kat Von D releases an all-cream eye shadow palette in the future. I think that will be a fun. :)

I have included 2 different FOTDs in this post. However, please also check out TheAccidentalBeauty's FOTD slide show on YouTube. She wore the blues really well and she has rather dark complexion! (Who said dark girls can't wear blues???!!!) There are more tutorials (<- click) of this palette on YouTube, if you are interested.

And now, please look at my FOTDs with blues and smokey eyes. :)

FOTD - Blues

Packaging/Price:

This is 34USD for 8 colours. Each is 0.05 oz. / 1.4 g. I think it's an excellent deal for what it offers.

As Metal Orchestra is a limited edition palette, its design is different from the regular True Romance Eye Shadow Palettes (such as Ludwig, shown in the picture). And Kat Von D's new limited edition palette Gypspy has yet another design (also shown on the left).

I like how she does a specific motif for each special item but maintains the shape and size of the palette. The individuality entices me to collect them all. And the consistency in packaging design helps with storage and organization.

What more can I ask for?

Metal Orchestra (Design)

My Verdict:

Thumbs up, of course! I can't find a reason not to like this palette. The colour, the texture, the packaging and the price. All in all, Kat Von D has done it again. I am just loving it as much as any of my True Romance. She may be a tattoo artist, but she certainly knows a thing or two in making an eye shadow palette work in a most wicked way! I can't rave enough. Simply a superior product. Kat Von D should have made this permanent.

I went on the hunt for this palette after seeing your earlier reviews. I managed to finally find it after visiting 3 sephora stores and having someone check the back stock. But I love blue e/s too so it was a must-have.

Pretty!! I wasn't able to get this one but I have Ludwig and Beethoven. I've been eagerly awaiting Gypsy to get into my local store too, but I don't know if we'll get it before it sells out!

Do you know what store this was found at, and do the stores ship? Thanks

Jenn: Great mind, think alike! :)

Catherine: I so love Gyspy too! I hope you can get this at your store.

Sarah: I don't know which Sephora store did she get it from but it's somewhere in her states. Perhaps you could call the Sephora stores near you to see if it has one? There was only one left when she called. Sorry.

Lina: Thank you!

The Mighty J: We are the Kat Von D twins. I thank my lucky star to get this palette!

iamgrape1119: This is already discontinued. But you can try your luck at local Sephora stores.

pinkyping: My American friend helped me to get all my Kat Von D palettes. Well, she helps me whenever I need her to buy makeup that's not available here. :)

Hello
I'm from France, but I don't know where I could buy this palette because Sephora.fr doesn't rend it. Do you know where I should search in order to pay in euros?
Thanks

I really appreciate how you include the ingredients in your review. THANK YOU! Unfortunately I'm allergic to many eye shadows - I suspect that it's bismuth oxychloride. So now that I'm experimenting more, I'm paying attention to what's in my makeup.

Nice blog - first time here! Will definitely be back.

Glockoma: Thanks for the compliment. I need to bring to your notice that the cream eye shadow in this quad had turned hard after a while. It's a pity as I really love it. Same as the cream in Gypsy palette. KVD needs to remove all the cream e/s from its LE palettes.
