I went to One Utama to buy some birthday presents for family members. As I was near the Shu Boutique, I decided to have a look at The Pink Collection (Rouge Unlimited and Gloss Unlimited). There were too many people hovering around those testers so I didn't manage to get a close look the last time I was there.
Oddly enough, that rather new collection had been replaced by the even newer products, the Painting Liners!!! The lip products had been moved to be placed with all other lipsticks and glosses. I suddenly lost the interest in trying them... I didn't even bother to look at them for more than a glance when the sales assistants picked them out for me! Well, I guess it's also because I am not a big fan of Shu lip products.
My eyes were definitely on the new Painting Liners! I was most excited to see the array of colourful liners and I quickly set to work with the swacthes. I was lucky as the store's just opened up for the day and I was the only customer! HAHAHA! They were all mine to play with! And I knew how friendly the sales assistants are in that store. I asked for permission to take pictures and as usual, they were only too happy to help. Love the girls there! I only buy Shu products in that store ever since I got to know them. I can't stand the boutique in Mid Valley and other counters as none of those places are as friendly and tension-free as this boutique. You get what I mean?
OK, let's look at this the brand new Shu Painting Liners! :)
Shu Uemura Painting Liner Collection, 2009
NOT Limited Edition
The Painting Liner has not been uploaded on any Shu Uemura sites yet, not even its Japan site! So I am presenting to you only the pictures I gathered.
Counter Display - Close Up
Shu also added its mascara collection alongside the Painting Liners. But I decided to skip those but only show the liners.
Swatches
Can you believe that someone actually stole the display samples? This display was just put up the day before! The sales assistants I spoke to were equally as shock as I was. They said even one of the rather large mirrors was also stolen! Whoever you are, shame on you!
M = Matte, G = Glittery
As a result, M Black is not included in this swatch collection. The girls told me the stock will only be in the store in the afternoon. Since I didn't have time to go back there again, I will try to update the swatch of M Black when I can. I was told it's super duper black, a lot more black than the M Midnight Blue which is already looking rather black even though it's blue!
This collection includes 10 brightly pigmented gel liners as seen above. It's a trademark, colourful Shu collection in my opinion. The colours available are:
G Gold
G Silver
M Black
M Brown
M Midnight Blue
M Vivid Blue
M Vivid Pink
M White
Metallic Green
Metallic Purple
Most of the colours are matte finish. Even the metallic ones are looking rather matte to me. I didn't know those two were metallic till the sales assistants told me so. I guess I will have to look at those again when I have a chance. They are also matte looking in the swatch picture above too.
The glittery shades are not very glittery either. I'd categorize them as shimmery finish instead. (But I guess I have a rather different standard for shimmers and glitters!) I am very intrigued by the M Midnight Blue. I thought it was the M Black till I swatched it because it is so bloody black! I think it is a good change from mostly bright colours in this collection. I will be worried to use an ultra black gel liner so maybe this is an alternative for someone like me. :)
The texture feels quite smooth. But I feel the Painting Liners are dryer than Bobbi Brown and MAC Gel Liners. I could be wrong though as the testers were exposed to the air as they were never closed, according to the girls. They said these liners are not dry. But since the stock wasn't in when I was there, I couldn't see a real item to compare notes. This was how I observed.
The Painting Liner is 75MYR each. I forgot to check how the content amount but they look like the standard size of gel liners. I am glad Shu makes this collection permanent. Gel liners or any eye liners should never be limited edition except for special shades.
Shu Uemura also released a retractable Portable Eyeliner Brush to be used with the Painting Liners.
Shu Uemura Portable Eyeliner Brush
I like how the brush being retractable and the bristles being uncut. I have had enough experiences with all the so-called natural hair brush turning rough on my skin after being used for some time. I was told brushes with uncut bristles would not have that problem. Well, I have yet to buy one truly uncut brush so I can't vouch for that. But when I tested the brush tester, it was just as soft as those super soft, uncut (and ultra expensive) RMK ones. I am not surprised to see its 85MYR price tag but it better works the magic!
By the way, (for the Malaysian readers), I was told that if you buy the brush at the One Utama boutique now, you can get a brush pouch while stock lasts. The girls did show me the two beautiful pouches but I was too busy playing with the liners and totally forgot to take a pictures of those. I am not sure if other Shu outlets have the same offer. But it's no harm to ask when you go to your Shu store because I really think those are useful. :)
Lastly, I am presenting to you the advertising booklet from this collection. It's so useful that I decided to take pictures of all the vital pages (in case it's not available in all countries.) If you visit your Shu store, please do ask for this booklet as there are step-by-step makeup guide for different problematic Asian eye shapes. Of course it promotes only Shu products but you get the general ideas. :)
Shu Uemura Painting Liner Guide
(Free issues while stock last)
You can see from the cover that Painting Liners are made to be mixed and matched!

The mascara on the same display.
Single Eyelids
Droopy Eyes
Round Eyes
Small Eyes
Stubborn Straight Lashes
That's all for now!

Oooh, these look beautiful. I'm with you on Midnight Black - it looks totally gorgeous. And I love the little booklet too! I'm really amused that I already follow many of the tips for small eyes lol. I've never tried anything from Shu before, since it never stands out to me... but perhaps I should see if Fashion Valley has a counter somewhere.
Awesome post. Thanks so much for the swatches and sharing the booklet.
I love the vibrant colors, even though I'm not a fan of matte finishes.
I'll have to get my hands on the booklet, it has great diagrams & ideas!
Thanks for sharing pages of the pamphlet, it looks like I have droopy eyes so a cat-eye could make me look more awake :D I like how Shu liner displays are formed like an artist's palette hehe The gel-liners are interesting, I wonder if it can cause enough noise to be right on top next to BB and Mac, which are 2 most popular gel-liners right now.
the colors are awesome! and I can't believe black got stolen! LOL I love how they display it!
I played with them too! I couldn't get pics since I was working and didn't bring my camera. That's what we have you for! The queen of swatching! :D I borrowed the brown to use. It actually glides better than my MAC Fluidline. As in, no double dipping needed. And the line goes on very solid. There was no transfer to the lid but it smudged a little bit near the tearducts after about 5 hours. all in all, still pretty good! I also compared the Shu black with Blacktrack, Shu's much darker. I can't decide which color to get :-/
So pretty colors!
I think that painting stuffs will be perfect as an eye shadow base :)
Great review!
and thanks for the pictures of the booklet! I love Japanese/Taiwanese prints for their step-by-steps. something that western prints won't have.
I used to have water colours in those exact colours in school so this is quite a scary reminder!
wow, those liners look fantastic.
The vivid colors are great, although I would probably only use the blues.
I love the mixing and matching though; I wonder how the gold and silver look mixed in with the matte colors? Makes me want to buy some Kate liners and see how they fare. Unfortunately gel liners never stay put on me, but I'm tempted to give them another try.
I want that advertising booklet! I'm going to drop by the dept. store at lunch and see if they have it in Japan yet. Probably not. unless it's the Omotesando store.
Thank you all for posting your comments. They are all very much appreciated! Hugs to all!
fuzkittie and Askemwhats: I was like, WT(X)!!! It's new and a BIG mirror??? How on earth??? tsk tsk, tsk...
xxpinkx: The Pink Collection's taken off the display to make way for the Painting Liners. However, you gotta go check it out in Takashimaya in NYC as that PINK collection is new there. And you are PINK so you need those rouge and glosses!!!
Catherine: That shows you know your makeup stuff! :)
Jenn: I am also not a fan of matte finish so that's why I am still on the fence about these liners. Even the metallic ones are also matte looking so I am a bit reluctant. We will see! I may just change my mind once I go to the store again... I am weak!
cloudbusrt, kuri and all the ladies: That booklet is FREE so if it's available to you, do get it!
Paris B: I know! These are so not your things!!! I don't think you need to be bothered but maybe just try out the brown liner so you can compare it with BB your HG gel liner! (still your HG, eh?)
Connie: OMG!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH for the quick run down. And you are saying it's better than MAC???!!! WOW!!! So maybe it's true that the display one dry up because they are not covered! Now I am very very very tempted! I already like MAC better than BB and I think I need that M Midnight Blue or M Black.
Are you still working at MUFE KLCC? Why did they let you borrow the sample? Lucky you! :)
Thank you for the swatches; they are amazing, and I love that these are supposed to be blended like paints. I'm also in love with the Midnight Blue.
Haha. I posted the same thing on my blog as well. :P I went to the Shu store in OU as well. :O Talk about coincidences.
Such a useful post... the cat-eye look is my favourite. Thanks for painstakingly reproducing the entire guide. Must take a lot of hard work...
wow~! painting liner collection~!
well, the face and eyes makeup ARE a work of art painting XD
thx for the eye tutorial posting ^^
i have a one double eyelid and a one single eyelid. this post will help me a lot how to makeup for both types XD
thx again!
Thanks for the swatches and pictures of the pampleth. The colors are gorgeous and so vibrant! Can't believe the black one was stolen!
J you are awesome!!! Love the diagrams!!!! Did I say you are awesome? Cuz you are!!!! lol
I love the diagrams. Thanks for posting them.
thanks for posting those fantastic diagrams! i love the purple.
Alex: I am tempted also because they work like paints and can be mixed. or else many of them are too bright as even liners for me.
Fie: I kept trying to leave you a reply on your shu post but your "post comments" function doesn't seem to work. please check that out.
So you must be there in the afternoon as the stock apparently was in when you arrived! yay!
reader, glo, The Mighty J, S. Vanessa Hailey & elaine: Thank you for your kind words. You are most welcome!
I have been following your blog for quite sometime and I must say that this post definitely pawn me because of the single eyelid tutorial and the pretty swatches~~ its really great~~ and so is your blog page ^-^
Great post!
I'M so interested at Shu Uemuar's mascaras now. Do you have any experiences with any of hem?
My hg until now is Shiseido Lasting Lift mascara, since it seems to be the only one to hold up the curl instead of weighing them down.
But, I feel it doesn't lengthen and volumize enough.
Jess...I´ve used Shu Uemura Mascara basic, but it´s not as good as Shiseido Lasting Lift. Shu´s mascara also dries out quickly.
Jess: I am totally with Jamilla. I wrote a review on Shu Basic and how the 4 tubes I had dried up so fast before I got to use it.
Lengthening wise, MUFE WP Lengthening is better and more definition for me.
I was only at MUFE for 3 days! Not my kind of environment, to be honest :-/. Too much work for too little pay :x I was working at another counter in Isetan so I just borrowed the jar of liner :p I've worked at Shu too but not recently. Ehhh.... I still prefer MAC because I trust MAC to not smudge. Shu smudge a little at the inner corners after about 5 hours... It's not really noticeable unless you close your eyes. so, if you can bear with that, go for it!
Connie De Alwis: I nearly bought that blue paint today! But I recall you said it smudges a little so i didn't because even if I like MAC's smoothness and etc, I can't even use MAC because it smudged on me. So if you prefer MAC, then this probably will not work right for me. I passed because of that. Thanks for reply.
thanks for the swatches and the liner guide! I just got the Vivid Blue and it's sooooo pretty! Can't wait to start experimenting with it.
the brush caught my eye, I'm so afraid o hurting my brush when I bring it around, retractable sounds great~
