Review: Urban Decay Urban Decay Eyeshadow Midnight Cowboy, Goddess (from Urban Essentials Set)

In the previous post, I reviewed the oversize Urban Decay Eyeshadow Prime Potion - Original (Sheer Nude) from Urban Essentials set. I am going to review the 2 eye shadows that come with the same kit in this following post.

Again, this is the Urban Essentials ($25USD)...

The two eye shadows: Midnight Cowboy & Goddess included in the same set...

($16USD each if bought individually.)

Swatches

Midnight Cowboy (beige with silver glitter)

&

Goddess (midnight blue with electric blue sparkles)

The beige and dark blue go well as a combination. I am particularly fond of Goddess as deep dark blue has always been my favourite eye shadow colour. Urban Decay Goddess is indeed gorgeous. Midnight Cowboy, on the other hand, is a common base colour. There is one other character I have observed - both colours aren't very pigmented as I have to layer a few times to make the colours show properly, especially the dark Goddess or else it's just a gray mess.

Unfortunately, the texture is much less than desired... Both colours are ultra gritty. I simply can't stand the large glitters in them because they have next-to-zero adhesive power. The glitters fall off my eyelids onto my face immediately after applied. Imagine the mess I have to clean up! There were occasions that I had to redo my eye makeup! You know what? Even with Urban Decay Prime Potion underneath, the colours stay put nicely but the glitters are still falling off like snowflakes! What's up with that???!!!

Packaging/Price:

These new Urban Decay eye shadow come in the convenient flip-up cases. And the design is quite lovely too. Compared to MAC eye shadow packaging, these are far more delicate and classic. I like how I can view the colour from the viewing window. And the label on the bottom matches the eye shadow colour, too. I have no complaints about the packaging at all.

As mine is part of a set, it's difficult to divide the dollars. However, if counted individually, each shadow (1.5 g. / 0.05 US oz.) will cost $16USD. A mid-range product.

My Verdict:

I have tried some Urban Decay eye shadows in the past (before the packaging was improved.) I am not sure if the formula's changed, too. However, judging from the texture of the two, I don't think there is much difference from the old ones. Urban Decay eye shadows have always been giving me a hit-and-miss impression. Some are good, others mediocre and many are coarse and dreadful. In my opinion, Midnight Cowboy and Goddess are on the lower end of the line.

It is no doubt that the two colours are exquisite, but they aren't extraordinary. Besides, when I judge an eye shadow, it is its texture that's most essential. Should the quality of an eye shadow be second-rate, there is no further discussion of its colouring and so forth.

I think these two eye shadows are bad sheep of the lot. I will not recommend them to anyone at all. Passed!

Therefore, if you are interested in getting Urban Decay Prime Potion, I'd strongly suggest you getting it alone instead, as the 2 eye shadows are totally redundant.

Aww! I'm sorry they don't work for you. Personally every time I've swatched them I've loved the texture, but can't bring myself to pay for them. May reconsider..

Thanks for the review. I really did not expect this from UD eyeshadows! The packaging is funky though. I like. *sighs* Those are lovely colors but too bad the texture is sucky :-/

Ti_Amo: How on earth do you make such glittery eye shadow's glitters stay??? I have tried many UD glittery eye shadows in the past and NONE of them worked. And that's why I said they are hit and misses. I think I'd just skip UD eye shadows all together even though some are not bad. I'd prefer an all even quality eye shadow brand.

yeah i have both of those eyeshadows in my book of shadows palette and they are gritty. i can't use midnight cowboy because the glitter always falls onto my cheeks!

The colors are beautiful. Too bad the texture sucks though.

So what UD shadows DO you like?

jojoba said...

Cam: Honestly, NOT many. Those I have tried and like are: Sin,Half-Baked, Smog, abd Vert, all of which have no glitters of any sort.

However, I don't think the texture of these good ones are as good as Shu ME or MUFE shimmery ones. They are just the better ones from UD. That's all.

Hmm...the only UD e/s I own is their book of shadows and I'm lucky all their colors are smooth and NON gritty at all! Maybe these singles are different..just like MAC, some of their formulation are gritty too :)

i hate how glittery midnight cowboy is! and they include that in almost every single one of their palettes

M: I was going to put that (Midnight Cowboy's in a lot of palettes) in the review but I didn't as I thought I'd stick to the eye shadows themselves.

I once had a Bad Girl palette that was so crap that it was given away as fast as I received it. I am not sure but maybe Midnight Cowboy was in it or something else??? I only recall it being very gritty with loads of glitters.

UD ppl must love their glitters very much and must think that everyone else also loves a nude with tons of glitter too. Duh!

Great review and thank you!! I just bought the set myself today and was looking to see if they're any good, because from the packaging they are so not what I'd usually go for! And way too much sparkle no wonder they fall off! I got the set only for the double size of UDPP, I guess I'll have to pass on the eyeshadows!! They should really learn from MAC!
