Review: Kanebo Lunasol Eye Shadow Quads – Scent Form Eyes 03a Black Tea & Sheer Contrast Eyes 01 Coral Coral,03 Blue Coral, 05 Orange Coral

If you are not reading this on mymakeupreviews.blogspot.com or in a feed reader, this site has stolen my content.

I did a review on these two products earlier but I have changed my mind about them shortly afterwards and I believe I owe an update as I am not liking these products as much as I thought I did. And that previous post was greatly misleading. So here is the review, again. I apologize for the hasty review earlier.

I thought Scent Form and Sheer Contrast had rather similar texture when I tested them. (I have previously posted a rough preview on
Lunasol Eye Shadows.) Now that I have tried them for over a few weeks, Scent Form Eyes (4 variations) gets my vote in terms of colours/texture, and Sheer Contrast Eyes (5 variations, spring 2008 collection) is a big thumb down for me. And I have 3 quads! Duh! No more Sheer Contrast for me.

As for Scent Form, though its colours suit me better, the texture is another thing. The surface of the champagne in my 03 Black Tea turned hard after few swipes.

These are the 4 quads I own.

Colour/Texture:
I’d say in general, Scent Form Eyes portraits a subdued, mature image while Sheer Contrast Eyes creates a younger, cheerful look. Scent Form is not as shimmery as Sheer Contrast, which is very glittery (especially the highlighting colours.) The glitters in all these quads are delicate and dainty but ultra bright and gleaming. If you have a problem with glitters, these quads aren’t for you as NONE of them are matte. Personally, I prefer Scent Form as it's more leaning toward metallic than the ultra glittering effect that Sheer Contrast gives. The colours of Sheer Contrast are OUT THERE while Scent Form being deeper and more pigmented. And Sheer Contrast colours are sheerer. And some of them need few applications to show colours, but then you'd probably end up too much glitters. I have tried one shade wet with MUFE Eye Seal but the colour was greatly diluted even though it stayed on the whole day. I was utterly disappointed in its pigmentation in wet form.

The texture is similar. Both are soft, but not powdery. They remind me of Shu Uemura Metallic (ME) finish which has a wet shine character. However, they do crease after a while. Particularly Sheer Contraste. I think these will need a boost from an eye base. Reapplications needed for sure, otherwise.

Packaging/Price:
They come in ultra lightweight bronze plastered plastic palettes ( - the size of MAC’s LE Christmas Palettes.) There is a built-in mirror and 2 duo-end applicators – one has 2 sponge tip and the other comes with a brush, very Shiseido like! The applicators are of no use for me as I prefer my own brushes and fingers! All Lunasol Quads are 160MYR each with the difference in weight. (Scent From is 6.3g in total while Sheer Contrast is 5.5g, possibly due to the formulas. Unfortunately, there is no ingredients list on the site nor anywhere in the palette so I can’t be sure.)

My Experience:
These are more of fun palettes but not very practical for me. Comparing to Lancôme Colour Focus Eye Shadow Quads, which are superb in their glittery shades, Lunasol ONLY concentrates on metallic and glitter textures and colour payoff isn't as good and the staying power is poorer, too. The pigmentation is enough for my skin tone but some shades needs few strokes than others to show up propperly. I would say these are some of the few Japanese makeup I can wear but not must-haves. They are far cry from my HG MUFE Shadow and Diamond Shadow in all aspects! No repurchase from me. I am not reaching out much of my four quads already! What a shame!

My Colouring:
LLL, MUFE Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream #4, MUFE Liquid Lift Foundation #2, Chanel Blanc Essential Light Reflecting Whitening Powder Foundation SPF25 PA+++ #30, Shu Uemura Velvet Perfect Lasting Powder Foundation SPF17, PA++ #774/#574, dark brown eyes, black hair
