Review: Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush (Euro, US Version & Lumieres Magiques De Chanel)

If you are not reading this on mymakeupreviews.blogspot.com or in a feed reader, this site has stolen my content.

In this following review, I will be sharing my experience of Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush. I started out by using its little sister product, Bourjois Blush, which is a cheaper and not so refined version of Chanel Joues Countraste. I no longer possess any Bourjois Blushes as they just don’t live up to my requirements and expectations. (Bourjois Blushes are inclined to harden overtime and become difficult to get colour off. Though this could be solved by brushing the top layer off from time to time, I’d rather get a better-quality product instead of worrying about such wearisome issue.)

I was introduced to Joues Contraste by an Australian lady who swore by the Euro shade 03 Brume D’Or. She insisted that I should try it out too as the colour would be great for my skin tone. After much conversation (and her persuasion), I decided to give it a try when I visited the local Chanel Boutique. And it has been a point of no return - my now large collection of Chanel Joues Contraste and a relatively smaller saving account...

I have to point out that we only have European Version of Chanel Joues Contraste in Malaysia. Like Bourjois, these Euro Version Joues Contraste are also baked. But for some reason, none of my Chanel ones ever become hardened over time (while at least 3 of my Bourjois Blushes did in less than 1 year.)

Also, I eventually realized that 53 Turbulent (too cool), 98 Fantasia (too dark), 46 Rose Defile (too warm) and Euro Version 15 Orchid Rose (too muddy) aren't suitable for my skin tone. And thus I no longer own those. It's a pity as I really adore those colours.

One last reminder, Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blushes are light rose scented. The fragrance lasts on skin for a while. If you are not into scented blushes, stay away please.

Colour/Texture:
Almost every Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush has a mixture of a few colours which makes it difficult to describe it. But because of this factor, the blushes give skin complexion a healthy glow from within instead of added on colours. Most of them are shimmering but the degrees vary. All shades are well pigmented, even if some very pale shade like #44 Narcisse. They usually go on a lot sheerer than their appearance in pans but so natural! They can be used to shape and model your face (cheekbones, brow bones, forehead, chin, and along the nose).

The texture is super soft and silky and very easy to apply and this is the very reason why they are set apart from Bourjois Blushes. Many Bourjois Blushes are just too grainy in comparison.

Price/Packaging:
Being Chanel, it naturally comes with a high price tag. They are about 42 USD or so (depends on where you get them.) Each Joues Contraste is 4g./0.14oz. so I’d say it’s still sensible in terms of value.

The Packaging is exquisite. Each comes in a traditional black Chanel compact with its logo on the surface. There is a black velvet pouch for each blush, though I never get around using any. It also includes a big mirror but a tiny brush. (The little brush is too small to be practical. It is made of natural hair so if you have allergy issues, don’t touch it.)

Ingredients:
TALC, PARFUM (FRAGRANCE), BENTONITE, ZEA MAYS (CORN) STARCH, SODIUM METHYLPARABEN [+/-(MAY CONATIN) CI 15850 (RED 7 LAKE), CI 15880 (RED 34 LAKE), CI 75470 (CARMINE), CI 77007 (ULTRAMARINES), CI 77163 (BISMUTH OXYCHORIDE) CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499 (IRON OXIDES), CI 77510 (FERRIC FERROCYANIDE), CI 77742 (MANGANESE VIOLET), CI 77891 (TITANIUM DIOXIDE), MICA]

Swatches (Euro Version)

I did a few coats to make them show up deeply.

These are also Euro Version too.

These 2 shades are from Chanel Fall Collection 2008.

NOTE: EURO VERSION 15 Orchid Rose has a lot more beige. Please refer to this picture below for its true colour. The US Orchid Rose has a lot more pink and is NOT a match to Bourjois Blush 03 Brun Cuivre.

99 Rose Petale vs. Bourjois Blushes 34 Rose D'Or & 95 Rose De Jaspe
95 Rose De Jaspe is a very good match.

I was given an US Version Rose Bronze/Mirage recently. I find the texture of Rose Bronze is more powdery and more pigmented compared to my Euro Joues Contraste (thus I have to be more careful with application.) Perhaps it’s because the US version isn’t baked. However, I can’t say which version I favour. I find it’s more an issue of choice of colours for me. If the colours suits, I will take it!

Here is a picture of US and Euro 98 Fantasia side by side (thanks to Makeup Alley memeber orangewasabi who kindly loaned it to me.)

SOME Jounes Contrastes have 2 names.

US Name/Euro Name: (Both names are printed on the US Joues Contrastes but NOT on the Euro version.)

They are:
Rose Bronze/Mirage, Angel Rose/Sphere, Blush/Rose Cache, Beige Rose/Rose Defile, Mocha/Souffle, Tempting Beige/Taffetas Glace, Ceder Rose/Trace, and Cocoa/Noisette.

Apparently Chanel is trying to produce all its products in France and Italy now so hopefully the future products will be the same so we don't have to hunt for US/Euro version, whichever we don't have access to.

My Colouring:
MUFE Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream #4, Duo Mat Powder Foundation #202, Liquid Lift Foundation #2, light skinned Asian (Chinese), dark brown eyes, long black hair (mostly straight with some wavy bits), slightly dry facial skin that hardly breaks out, medium pigmented lips that are chapped easily.

I love Chanel JC Blushes and you did a great job with these swatches. I hope you'll do more in the future!

Hi there!

Was wondering if you could describe the actual colour / shade of Enchanterrese? I'm thinking of purchasing it online and I don't have the time to check the colour / shade out in stores? And do you reckon it will suit MAC NC40 skin (if you're familiar with MAC)?

Thanks!

Yes, it's a plummy colour with a tad of brown. And yes, it will suit your colouring MC40 well. HTH
