Review: Shiseido The Makeup Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow (spring/summer 06, spring/summer, 07spring/summer 08)

Previously, I have posted reviews on my favorite powdered eye shadows. And here is the review on the only cream eye shadows I use.

Shiseido The Makeup Hydro-Powder Eye Shadow

Color/Texture:

Hydro-Powder Eye Shadows are water based (though looks/feels like cream eye shadows) that turn into powder once applied and dried. All colours are shimmering, pigmented and wearable. The first launch (spring/summer 06) is a lot more sparkling compared to the second (spring/summer 07) and third releases (spring/summer 08). They are the only cream shadows that don’t crease on my lids and survive in this humid weather for hours. They are also great as eye shadow base, eye liners. And some can be used as highlighters on cheekbones (H1 & H2).

The texture is consistently silky-smooth. However, H1 Goldlights and H2 Whitelights have most shimmers and thus are somewhat gritty in contrast but definitely NOT chalk at all. The eye shadows looks solid in the pots but very easily picked up with a synthetic brush or fingers. (I am a finger girl when it comes to cream products!)

1st launch (spring/summer 06)

H1 Goldlights: sparkling yellow gold
H2 Whitelights: sparkling white
H3 Tiger Eye: golden bronze with minimal shimmers.
H4 Spring Plum: plum with green shimmers.
H5 Aqua Shimmer: shimmery turquoise (more blue than green)

2nd launch (spring/summer 07)

All very lightly shimmered compared to the 1st launch
H6 Violet Visions: metallic satin purple with blue under tone
H7 Green Exotique: metallic satin jade green
H8 Bare Pink: metallic satin beige pink
H9 Glistening Sand: metallic satin neutral beige

Swatches of All Except H11

Swatches of H3, H10 & H11

This picture was taken under outdoor overcast natural daylight. Each swatched about twice.

3rd launch (spring/summer 08)

All very lightly shimmered compared to the 1st launch and are the most translucent.
H10 Languid Lagoon: shimmery pale sea blue (a lesser shade of H5)
H11 Rose Tulle:: sparkling pale pink
H12 Lemon Sugar: shimmery pale lemon yellow
H13 Clover Dew: shimmery pale geen

I borrowed this picture from Makeup Alley as I don't own any shade from this collection because they are very sheer. They do show on my skin but very light.

This picture belong to fleckenschnitte of Makeup Alley.

Note: I have tested the 3rd launch at counters and still undecided whether or not to get them. I am very interested in H12 and H13 as I think both can be very useful as base shades or applied alone. However, this collection is VERY sheer.

Pakcgaing/Price:

The packaging is a heavy weight see-through glass pot. Each pot comes with a sponge applicator. (**They are actually nuisance since there is not a place in those pots to store them. I left those applicators inside boxes and stored them away.) Each pot is 6g./0.21 oz at the price of 75MYR. They are not exactly cheap but it’s acceptable because a little product goes a long way.

My Experience:

These are by far the only cream eye shadows that don’t crease on me. I have tried so many different brands in the past and eventually gave up on cream eye shadows till these were released. I am happy none of them are limited edition as they are simply great products. They are pigmented enough to show on my skin tone, even with the lightest shade. (I am very impressed as most Asian eye shadows are just too sheer for me.) These shadows are multi-functional too. Not only have I used them as shadows but also liners (even on water lines), blushes and highlighters. The most useful shade in my collection will be H8 Bare Pink which can be used as an eye shadow, and eye liner and a cream blush. The least useful should be H5 Aqua Shimmer, which can solely be used as an eye liner.

Swatches And Comparison:

My Colouring:

MUFE Full Cover Extreme Camouflage Cream #4, Lift Concealer #3, Duo Mat Powder Foundation #202, Liquid Lift Foundation #2, Clarins Instant Smooth Foundation 1.5.
Light Asian skin (obvious brown spots on cheekbones, slightly dry & doesn't breakout easily), dark brown eyes, jet black hair, medium pigmented lips

Thank you for this review! You just reminded me that I need to use my hydro powders. I love them, but I always forget about them and use a MAC Paint Pot instead :)

Pixie: Don't we all do that? I love these but I also don't reach for them much because they are cream. Just prefer loose and powder eye shadows. :)
